The local council could and should have solved this long ago. Remove the statue to a museum where it can be displayed next to a huge plaque explaining how Colston's philanthropy was a result of wealth acquired  dubiously. How times were different back then, how we can learn from mistakes. In other words, doing what museums should do.
As an aside, many locals from that area were shanghaied into slavery in Barbados. In fact there are traces of the West Country accent that (until recent times, anyway) could be heard in Bajan speak. Poor sods sunburned to red and were known as the "Ecky Peckys". I know it's nowt to do with the thread but I'll never get another chance to use that fact.

Idiots. Why didn't they use suncream? Didn't they listen to what Baz said?

Is your name a celebration of the actions of the Manchester and Salford Yeomanry on that fateful day in August 1819?

If not, it should be.

HOW FUCKING DARE YOU.

CUNT!
It makes you wonder after 11 weeks of lock down

The 1st chance people get to go outside & protest their off

Bit like shoving a stick in an ants nest in July

The way some people are going on you would think we are living in South Africa in the 80's

We cant change the past but we can learn from it

How far back to we go for wrong doings?

Do we protest against the Vikings for rape & pillage?

The Romans for what they did ?

How about the Dutch when they landed in the USA & drove native Red Indians off their land

The Spanish & Portuguese

Oh & the French for their colonies they still run

All wrongs of course

As a country we are not perfect & never will be

But we must be one of the most tolerant & accepting ones

As a club will have a proud history where as some have shame

These protests will do more to inflame any racial tensions rather than quell them

You will end up with people sympathising with right wing groups who wouldn't normally give them the time of day

(06-08-2020, 08:41 AM)ChamonixBaggie Wrote: [ -> ]interesting how the protesters can be labelled a lawless mob who should be attacked with rubber bullets (that have caused several innocent people to lose eyes in recent days) based on the actions of a small percentage of them but when it comes to the police its always "a few bad apples" and "we can't judge all of them based on the actions of a few".

Anyway, as Duffers says pretty much every right and freedom we enjoy in this country was hard-won through civil disobedience. Some on here would still be tilling the fields for their masters if it was up to them, Christ.
tHIS.

Muppets in supermarkets that don't understand one way system arrows, the cnuts. Unfortunately it's our elder generation that are unable to comprehend this simple well signed instruction.

Any others?

Youngsters wanting to protest, without maintaining social distancing - because they are unlikely to die from it. Fuck everyone else they come into contact with, or spread to, including their own family.

Others that believe Democracy is dead, and take the law into their own hands, chucking monuments into the water.

Cunts.

Protest all you like when it is safe to do so, and don't break any laws. How would we feel if the Wolves fans pulled down Bomber's statue?? The protesters  had absolutely no mandate to remove the Colston statue. (and I understand why they want it removed, but demolishing it is not the way).

I don't agree with what he stood for, but I hope all of the law breakers have a knock on the door in the morning. You can't create anarchy without expecting the consequences. Law and Order has to preside.
Correct e if I'm wrong, but Bomber was never responsible for the displacement of 84,000 Africans or the death of 19,000 of them.

Ah, that makes it all ok then

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the police have undertaken to find the law breakers and prosecute them.

I hope they receive maximum penalties.

These people have broken the law and should be fully punished
Are there any more 'dodgy' statues that are likely to get torn down?
Victoria was Empress of India IIRC and I'm sure there was a spot of skullduggery going on out there!
We could go on & on

The Irish were targeted in the UK following the IRA bombing campaign in the 70's

The cast system in Indian

Should the yanks send the statue of liberty back to France because of what they did in the colonies?

How about Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe ethnically cleansing the country sending 99% of its residents into poverty

Why didnt his neighbouring countries stop supporting him?

The list is endless of one group treating another badly

Non acceptable
I wonder how many people on this thread have failed to observe social distancing during the last few weeks? It is against the law you know and you can be arrested and/or fined for it.
