I understand the research is a bit flimsy in proving causation. And I suspect that outlawing a lot of bread, breakfast cereal and fizzy pop would be a lot more difficult politically than fags.

Not very libertarian of you.

Do I agree with a ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces, yes I do, I agree with the sale if cigarettes being heavily taxed.

But a total ban, no.

It's an infringement on personal freedom.

I'm not a smoker, so it doesn't affect me, I don't drink that much these days, so I could deal with the forthcoming ban on alcohol. It will come. But I don't think it's right.

Not often you find yourself in the same camp as Truss and Johnson.

Seems that more than one poster on the politics board had to have a very thorough shower yesterday.

What happens if some lawyer takes the government to court on the grounds of age discrimination?

And just like that, Rishi creates another (and even more harmful) black market.

What a pathetic, headline-grabbing policy this is, that probably won’t clear all obstacles anyway. Desperation politics.

Christ, another one agreeing with Dekka's favourite Tufton Street cabal. I strongly doubt there will be any increase in the prevalence of Black Market activity above that which already exists due to taxation.

How do you know?

As a number of people have observed what is also to stop people buying them and selling/passing them on?

How do I know? I can be pretty sure that no one would fund the case in the first place.

There's nothing to stop people passing them on. Just like there's nothing to stop kids buying illicit drugs. I'm not sure what your point is.

Yeah, there's absolutely no chance that the tobacco industry would fund a proxy case in order to protect its own interests.

That's precisely the point. The ONLY funder would be the tobacco industry. How would the optics of that look for them, do you think?
