Villa in the 76/77 season was the last crowd over 40k at the Hawthorns. They then put the paddock seats in the Rainbow which cut capacity to around 38k
Yes CIM, recall the capacity being 38,600 for a long while- biggest gate I was in was 36,000 plus a couple of times.

Remember we getting just under 37,000 against Coventry in a cup replay around 79.
Man Utd in the cup midweek we won 3-2 Regis winner 39k plus that night iirc. I was in the Smethwick next to the utd fans.
I was a 16 year old in the corner of the Smerhwick surrounded by Utd fans...bloody pissing down rain, got soaked but what a game.

Could always bank on more being in the ground. Used to see plenty climbing over walls to get in for big games. And in the mid 70s  when I was 6 or 7 I used to get in for free. My old man would just say at the kiosk that I would sit on his knee so I got in for free.

Yeah. That's the closest we've got to 40k since. 37,792
