I know the total sum of fuck all about businesses, balance sheets etc, but would it make sense for a takeover to take place at the start of the financial year the 6th April?

Completion of any sale is almost certainly going to happen on the 1st of the month. Its not always the case, but it does make the Financial side if things easier.

I'm starting to think the potential buyer is inclined and waiting for the respective companies or groups full accounts to be released onto companies house (April ish?), and for them to review, before they go through with the transaction.
I personally would, considering you can't trust the current incumbent as far as you throw them.

The prospective buyers will have been in receipt of the accounts to 30th June 2023 long ago. They will also be given a lot more details that doesn't get submitted to companies house, such as the forecasted cashflow statements.

I personally would, considering you can't trust the current incumbent as far as you throw them. Anyone waiting and relying on accounts being filed, which by then would already be 9 months old, couldn’t be serious bidders. They will be looking at up to date management a/cs and assessing them for accuracy before risking their money.
