Now name the Stoke managers for each of those games

Well the last 2 are easy enough.

First one who knows Richie Barker.

No - that old stoat Barker actually took caretaker charge of a couple of WBA games.  Which ones?

Nope.

I know that now.

Fun fact of the day. Richie Barker was an utter, utter dickhead.

Why

Because we were playing some of the best football ever and getting some really good results with one of the best midfield units in the country, containing Sammy Mcllroy, Mickey Thomas, Mark Chamberlain and Paul Bracewell, then in pre-season, Barker went on a course extolling the virtues of POMO (position of maximum opportunity), which basically involved booting the ball up to the strikers and bypassing the midfield.

It was being used very successfully by Graham Taylor at Watford who had a team built for it. Barker thought this sounded a real hoot. He was sacked 5 months later with us rooted to the bottom of the league.

Ahh - whatever happened to Mark Chamberlain, thought he was destined for great things.

Not sure memory says Harford left December and his eventual replacement was Denis Smith. Have to be honest I thought there was more than 2 games between his departure and Smith's appointment. Did we have another caretaker manager.

Started suffering with his hamstrings then made a rather disastrous decision to join Howard Wilkinson at Sheff Wednesday. He was barely heard of again.

Easily the most stunningly brilliant player I've seen in a Stoke shirt. There was a roar from the crowd like I've never heard before or since, every time he got the ball. Electric pace, brilliant dribbler, brilliant crosser of the ball.

He was an absolute phenomenon. A real tragedy he just seemed to fade to obscurity.

In the 3-0 win he tore our defence to pieces. I was so impressed I took my dad (who was originally from Stoke) to the Luton game later that season. Good decision it was the 4-4 match. my dad being a contrarian thought Ricky Hill was the best player on the pitch that day.

Two attack-minded teams going for it. Widely regarded by most who were there to be the best game they'd ever seen. Count me and my dad in that number.

Eight goals, our keeper sent off with no sub keepers allowed at that time, a last minute penalty miss (for once, not us), and goalmouth incidents galore. Cracking stuff.

Dates and season dead right - just the wrong 2 games.....
