I suspect alternative fuels will soon render the rush to battery technology one of the most stupid chapters in industrial history.

Alternative fuels have the constraint of green hydrogen production capacity coupled with hydrogen needing to be generated then needing to be synthetised as a fuel before then needing to undergo a reaction (combustion or electrochemical), that's three extra sources of loss compared with directly converting stored electrical energy to kinetic energy via an electric motor. BEVs are more efficient, that's why FCEVs and hydrogen internal combustion haven't taken off.
Alternative fuels have a market, likely shipping, planes and probably niche automotive applications (performance vehicles and motorsport) but for the normal person BEVs are better and significantly operationally cheaper.
