He'll fail. ID politics is all the Left has these days.

As for Johnson, the mood music - depressingly, amongst several Councillors I had drink with last night was that he's staying. And he's still popular on the doorstep apparently.

You're the one who brought up identity politics, are you a leftie now?

I tend to agree with you that he'll stay. It's more a sign of the moral malaise in society.

Identity politics infuriate me and currently Starmer is inheriting a similar mess that Neil Kinnock did.

When engaging our supporters I used to use this simple question Do you rate Chris Brunt? If the answer was no then I knew they were as thick as pig poo and not worth listening to. I now do the same question regarding Johnson. If the answer is yes I rate / like him then I believe the person to be as thick as pig poo and or morally bankrupt. It’s a simple an accurate test of the persons knowledge and outlook on life.

Arf.

But more importantly I agree on both counts.

I may well agree with you.

But you've just encapsulated the Labour Party's problem - if you don't understand peoples' motivation for liking Johnson then you have very little chance of beating him.

The labour party don't need to beat him, he's doing a good job of that himself.

How far ahead in the polls ought the Labour Party to be at this stage in an absolute shit show of a Parliament?

Neil Kinnock held a 15% point lead over Dear Margaret in 1990, when broadly speaking the UK was in a much better state politically and economically than it is right now.

You think that polls tell the story? Fair enough but if, as you say, hardened blue bloods like yourself wouldn't vote for him then why would the neo blue wall voters when they realise they have been sold some magic beans?

The only reason for the talk of an election next year is because the longer this goes on the more obvious it will become. Excuses will run out, Brexit, Covid, war, oil, will all become yesterdays news, then we'll be back to partygate no matter how many times JRM refers to it as fluff (and that comes from someone who will know a lot about fluffing I'd imagine) and the levelling up (that will come as a surprise to the locals when they see it) and the emperor's new clothes will become very apparent.

I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a renewed interest in the Russia report after everything that is going on and their interference in elections gone by. And also the slow sanctioning of oligarchs allowing them time to put assets into trust in the marshall islands or similar places, or even renewed interest in Tory party donors of Russian extraction. It will be interesting to see how many of the rank and file MPs hold the line when they see their futures on the line, and then it will become a skeletons out of the closet time. I'd imagine our old friend Dom will also have held some juicy bits back as well.

You can hope I suppose.

By this time next year no-one will give a shit about anything other than the cost of everything. TBH in that context everything else is indeed, fluff.

The Tory Party will dump Johnson for a photogenic leader promising to deal with the Cost Of Living Crisis, whilst remaining fiscally responsible (arf).

All the things you mention will die with Johnson. Good luck to Labour in the absence of a big idea.

And good luck to the Tory party in getting rid of Big Dog without him tearing the house down
