Bournemouth have also signed Morgan Rogers on loan now. Having been burned with our signing of Ivanovic last year I don’t think Cahill is the type of player I’d want to see us going for. I think it’s one of those which could be either a great success or could turn out he’s just completely past it.

Cahill and Rogers average out at 27, so it’s ok.

The difference with Cahill is that he was still playing regularly in the PL last season, and with Bournemouth having a very inexperienced back line currently, it’s a pint worth taking. Ivanovic had spent the last 3 years in the Russian league! Cahill wouldn’t have been the right fit for us, but he’s a good fit for B’mouth. The lad from Spezia looks good on YouTube, but prior to last season his goal scoring record is patchy at best, with the majority of his games coming in the Italian 3rd tier. At the right price, he’s worth a punt but the €5/6m being mooted as an asking price is ludicrous money.

Ivanovic had played in a World Cup and the Champions League just before he signed for us. Some players just reach a point where they can’t do it anymore. In recent years the likes of John Terry and Ashley Cole haven’t really impressed at all in the Championship. Personally I think Cahill is a rather desperate signing.
