Attendances 1968
#1
I have been reading a 1968 pre-cup final newspaper pullout this afternoon that was published for one of the national papers. There is a article entitled 'Where are Albion's missing thousands' which goes on to have a pop at us only averaging 26,000 and that Everton were averaging double this.

The article writer doesn't understand how a successful side such as us can't pull more punters through the turnstiles being on the doorstep to such a big city as Birmingham. Apparently Coventry were averaging 33,000 in a relegation battle and Blues stats were 29,000 in the League below....Villa were even praised for averaging 19,000 with a struggling team in Division 2.

The fickleness of our supporter base was highlighted by the fact that we played Man Utd (6-3) and had 55,000 but two days later played West Ham and only managed 25,000.

Although, looking at that differently, we can still accommodate the 25k that watched West Ham but not the 55k that watched Man Utd.

Remember when I started going in the 70s we’d get 16,000 when the likes of Norwich or Middlesbrough came to town and 35,000 when the big clubs came.
We are similar to many clubs in fickleness.
Always maintain that we should have just over 30,000 but most fans are realistic about us as a club/capacity of stadium.

We need the Marketing Manager at Coventry from 1968.......33K average attendances during a relegation battle. I can't remember them averaging above 20K when they were half decent

When we won the cup we averaged 26k, Villa and Blues both the wrong end of the division below got 25k and 24k respectively.
