If we can then move Edwards, Harper, Kipre out on loan, move Grosicki, Bond, Krov out, and see if we can find anyone to take Ivanovic, Peltier, Sawyers off our hands - great.

Not a single one of those midfielders can link defence and midfield. We’d just be penned back even more than we already are. If you don’t like Sawyers and what he does then we need to a get a better version of him otherwise he has to play.

Thoroughly disagree.

Our midfield has 2 functions, firstly to supplement the block and prevent runners into our box (something we’ve failed to do for 2 years now and killed us against Leeds) and secondly to force turnovers and get the ball into the opposition’s final third as fast as possible. This can be done either with a quick ball to a target man to hold up, stretching the play  into the channels for a wide runner, or to carry it themselves quickly.

Sawyers contributes neither as part of the defensive block, nor as a ball carrier, and his passes are rarely more than 10-15yards. Yes he is excellent at maintaining possession, but this isn’t part of Sam’s blueprint, or a crucial function of a team that’s in our position.

We have no shortage of pace wide, and our fullbacks are pretty good at attacking, we need a midfield that can cover back, win the ball, protect the space and get it forward as fast as possible. Under Roy and Clark we had 2 of Scharner, Yacob and Mulumbu and our midfield functioned just fine.

Looks increasingly like Snodgrass will be the only new recruit available for the Dings game  Sad

No one is comparing their other attributes. I was merely comparing their mandatory roles. To receive the ball from the defence and pass it on. But as you say if we have no ambition to keep the ball and just play it long perhaps the need for a Sawyers type might not be needed under the current manager.

Yh if lumping it long into the channels is our main ambition you might well be correct.

Well Grenier is a Sawyers type who actually tackles and runs.

Sawyers is a big part of the reason we've been shit this season. I would have loved to play against players like Sawyers as a player. So easily picked up and dealt with

He really isn’t a Sawyers type. Sawyers plays deep whereas under Allardyce we’ll play a classic holding midfielder like Choudhary deep and have Grenier and Gallagher ahead of him. It’s going to be more direct type of football as Choudhary can’t pass or link the play..

It's Albion.

Any of our transfers will be held up because we've run out of Green Shield Stamps.

My ambition is to make the most of the players we have available and in so doing pick up more than 0.5 points a game.

Allardyce is our manager, we have a load of fast and tricky wide players and big defenders, the weakest squad in the league and budget far smaller than anyone else in the division.

Playing possession football around the edge of our own box doesn’t suit our manager, squad or finances.

Start Edwards and Phillips wide and drop Diangana, Robinson, Pereira and Krov. Can't wait.
