There were five candidates initially. She got to the last two with Andrea Leadsom. Leadsom made some crass comment for which she got pilloried and decided to stand down.
Leaving May unopposed and unelected?

May had gone through two ballots and the third, the members vote, was cancelled as the other candidate pulled out after blotting her copy book.
Gordon Brown did not have to face any ballots, party or membership. He was just crowned.

It does beg the question as to how she imagined things were actually going to work. Perhaps she thought "Brexit means Brexit" was just some inane piece of sloganeering; although, to be fair, those were my thoughts as well.
There will be other moments of clarity in the months to come: just wait 'til it dawns on Mark Francois that he has a French name.
