I think it’s also been a huge public benefit that they tend to take over large buildings, many of which are statutorily listed and may have been old cinemas or ballrooms, and keep them in use and properly maintained. You only have to look at places like the Royalty in Harborne to see what can happen if no-one finds an alternative use for them.
This is a very fair post.
I’ve blacklisted Spoons following Brexit, but I understand that they have done some good. They do however treat their stuff and suppliers very poorly, but I guess that’s most big business these days.

If people refused to use businesses because their owners are cunts then I don't know how they'd get on in life!
Ideally all businesses would be fair, but that's just not the case, unfortunately. I'm not going to research every business to check how they treat staff etc before I use them. I don't have the time for that, and I probably wouldn't be able to purchase anything or enjoy much in life.

Do people check out the political views of every pub landlord before deciding to give them their custom?

Of course they don't.

I worked there years ago, and I know people who went in on the Grad programme, and i know the landlord of one in Birmingham… well, the manager.
But maybe they’re all wrong

There’s a difference between supporting Brexit and being one of the most vocal advocates and funders of it… In the same way I won’t buy a Dyson, or read certain newspapers.

Not during covid they didn't. Some live in staff were told to leave their premises without even the chance of furlough. This was the reason I (and a few mates) decided not to use Spoons. Over time, most of us have drifted back. Overall I tend to agree with whoever it was upthread that pointed out they bring life to large empty premises. Plus, I'd be lost without them on many away days.

Something deeply depressing about seeing people queuing at the front door for a pint at 9am in the morning and by 11am four pints in.
I go in them occasionally but I couldn’t list a top five.

I had a trial shift at one when I was a student, appalling conditions and terrible management. Saw an elderly man fall and cut his head and they made him sign a waiver before calling an ambulance. I wasn’t even paid for my time, and refused the job on principle.
In the form of his life.

Queueing is awful, isn't it.
