Unfortunately at away games a nearby town with a Spoons is a necessary evil as they are among the few places that can handle a bus or 2 of thirsty football fans. For that, Winchester ( for Southampton) is a 10/10.

The best Wetherspoons are the ones that have closed down.

I don't understand the hate of a Spoons. You know exactly what you're going to get. I don't actively seek them out, and I'd much prefer going to a proper pub, but for what they are they're alright.

Whilst my politics don’t align with those of Tim Martin, Wetherspoons pubs do offer an option for people on low incomes or the elderly somewhere they can afford to go for a few drinks or cheap unlimited coffee and somewhere to stay warm.
I think it’s also been a huge public benefit that they tend to take over large buildings, many of which are statutorily listed and may have been old cinemas or ballrooms, and keep them in use and properly maintained. You only have to look at places like the Royalty in Harborne to see what can happen if no-one finds an alternative use for them.

Harborne would never entertain a Weatherspoons on their high street. |
