Heggebø

On the backfoot we have two industrious midfielders in the M & Ms, and we have a bustling centre forward who holds the ball up well and takes pressure off the team. It's all set up for performances like Stoke.

On Saturday only when Mikey Johnston was in space and attacking their full back did we look like we could conjure something. Basically he was our only real threat. Apart from a couple of touches and that cheeky chip Price didn't do much.

We aren't going to score many goals, and Heggebo isn't going to get many chances. He had his worst game on Saturday, but this is in a team that lost it's first game.

Heggebo is still well in credit to me, but there'll be more questions asked if we start seeing more of the same as Saturday in the weeks ahead.

Bang on PP. We seem more likely to be successful away from home in the way we're set up. I'd like to see a more attacking line-up at home, particularly when teams are coming to frustrate.

It's a long old season though, and I think we're starting from a good foundation, with a solid defence. I think we'll be in and around the top 6. Whether we make the play-offs is likely to be based on how we approach the January window.

They have, or at least that's how I've interpreted the posts questioning the value we've paid for him, and those that are saying it's a poor signing.

I'm all for arguing against Derek and proving him wrong, BTW, but I think he's right on this occasion.

I’m not sure I saw a single post suggesting he’s a waste of money. Granted I don’t spend as much time on here as some (or as I indeed used to) but I think he’s quite a worthwhile addition to the squad.

But what blind loyalty to his work rate isn’t getting us is goals. It is quite clear that we needed something extra on Saturday, and Mason chose to ignore that. It was a similar situation against Pompey - except for MJs worldie - and one could argue the winner at Stoke was via the benefit of fortune.

I think Heggebo works his arse off, and I’m glad to have him here. But we need goals that he isn’t scoring. If he can develop them (which he has) then great, but am I wrong to point out that he did neither of Saturday? I don’t think I am.

I think he'll develop into a Geoff Horsfield type striker who, I think, had good championship scoring record

That’s the hope. I think when we sort our midfield conundrum and give him another 5-10 yards advance he’ll start to bear fruit.

Said earlier that the player he reminds me of is a young Chris Wood, if either of us are right he'll do well.  In any event after only 5 games he is at the low end of a very steep learning curve and we just need a bit more patience with him as he gets to grips with this league.

Horsfield was superb for us during the 03/04 promotion, from memory. Maybe that's rose-tinted memory, because I bloody loved him.

He was superb in the champ. Decent scoring level, and brought tons to the team in terms of back to goal play and smart movement. Better technically than many gave him credit for too.

Obviously a different matter in the prem, but virtually all our players struggled in the prem at that time.

Corrected that for you

The Horse was a, 'just better than 1 in 5' man once he rose above what is now League One.

Think Heggebø needs to aim for 1 in 4. A dozen goals  from a 46 game season is excellent given his overall contribution to the team.

I agree with others that our lack of genuine threat is a midfield issue, although I personally go a step further and consider it to be a Molumby issue, when looking at the current team.
