If you are conservative by nature, accepting change slowly the anything goes attitude of liberalism without stigma can appear seedy I guess.
After all we live in an era where homosexuality is very much publicised on TV and there is a very open and highly publicised debate on gender ideology that appears to get too much airplay and is seen as extremely strange to many people.
I guess that mixed in with a fear of mass immigration is a pretty good stick to beat liberal values with.
I’d like to say I’m only guessing. Those aren’t my views being quite liberal myself.
Interesting point made on a pod yesterday.
"One of the biggest problems that Labour strategists have is that they just can't understand why anyone would vote Tory in the first place"
Same rules apply I guess. Baffling to me and thee but of course which is why we can only presume it's because these people are a combination of misogynistic, xenophobic and racist, and generally not too bright.
But it cant be that simple?
Half of America = Good
Half = Bad.
Its just so much seems counterintuitive. I mean the link between Trump and Fundamentalist Christian's ffs, how do they square that circle.
Throwing around those words just gets people's backs up.
Here's an example. I live by some nice lakes in Warwickshire. In recent years there's been more undesirables around the lakes such as East European poachers and, predominantly Asian, young lads who have been seen doing drug deals and driving around menacingly in very expensive sports cars. We now see police patrolling more as the issue has got so bad.
Last week I spoke to a neighbour who's parents live by these lakes. The parents are moving as they don't feel safe any more.
I don't like seeing these shifty people around there. Does that make me racist? I think not. I just don't like crooks and criminals regardless of colour.
Equally if you are in a neighbourhood that has completely changed due to a huge influx of immigration and you miss how it used to be does that make you racist?
I'm not so sure. I think the inability to debate these differences and the issues and just shouting names are driving people to the likes of Farage.
It's worrying times as we can't seem to have level headed discussions any more.
As I've said. I'm playing d?evil's advocate. I just happen to know people more angry and intolerant of change who have voiced this. Some of these are very decent people just fed up as they feel things have changed for the worse.
I think that's the point I was trying to make, badly?
Because we have no understanding, we cannot empathise, and have to resort to these words for explanation.
When you provide some context it does help. As in the UK, there is a demographic who want their world to stay the same, if not return to some halcyon day. This isn't possible, the change has allready happened, but snake oil salesmen like Trump and Farage will tell you a little dab of what they are selling will put it all right again. They are selling time travel.
Unfortunately there is no doubt that both of these men ARE also misogynistic, racist and xenophobic (as well as being priviledged) so by association we conclude the same of their voters. Even though we know it's much more complex.
And even more unfortunately for their supporters these rich, privileged, narcissistic men genuinely couldnt give a fuck about their voters, they just love power and money. It's to feed their fragile egos and fill their pockets.
Americans need to try and vote on a reality ticket, rather than the brutal fantasy trump is promising. These are interesting times.
