So Chagos is back on the agenda...

Front page of papers most people don’t read any more. I doubt most people could tell you where it is on a map let alone the complexities of its military significance, cultural-political issues and all that comes with it. I can’t imagine many people that voted Labour if any would alter their next choice based on this.

For the record, I’m surprised the Tories got as far down the line with it as they did, yet another unopened package for the current incumbents to tidy up.

Hundreds of thousands of people lent them their vote solely to get the Tories out. In the media it won't be neatly packaged as a militarily complex, cultural-political issue with all the nuanced detail, it'll be about sOvErEiGnTy and the possibility of China (the country, not the poster, before the shenanigans start) getting it.

If folk don't think sovereignty pushes buttons in this country then they haven't been paying attention.

I'd even argue it would be better to pull the deal ourselves as opposed to the US making us.

Also, I can't tell if you're overly literal person or being disingenuous, when I say front page news, you must know I don't just mean physical newspapers? It will be a lead story everywhere.

My view is you’re right about the extend the media will try to magnify it but that it lacks so many of the News Values necessary to engage people (proximity, familiarity, prominent nation etc) that it will go over most peoples heads as it already has. It engages the likes of me and you on some level but voters vote on what effects their own lives - mortgages, health, who lives next door etc. Chagos has no immediacy or prominence to any of those things and is an issue of the elites that they are shouting about because they are who it matters to.

Badly started by The Tories, poorly finished by Labour. Nobody comes out with any credit in this one.

Looks like Labour are trying to force this through before the arrival of Trump, who will veto it. A change of Government in Mauritius isn't helping.
