Surely Starmer should have just canned the Tory deal on Chagos, as he did with deportations to Rwanda.
Now a UK government negotiator is travelling to meet Trump's team to plead with them to allow us to cede sovereign land. The optics are terrible.

I don’t think the optics on Chagos cover more than 5% of voters that would’ve had some sort of opinion on Rwanda. You’re talking about global geo politics and comparing it to the issue (immigration) that has been number one on voters recorded concerns for about 15 years

The optics are Trump and the new US government are defending UK sovereignty and Labour/Starmer (despite it being a Tory legacy issue) aren't.

I'm pretty certain Trump doesn't give a flying fuck about UK sovereignty and wants to ensure that there is a base for US troops and ships in the region. In fairness to the US it appears to be an important base in the Indian Ocean which is surprising to see that it has got this far if that was the case.
A complex global issue whereby on the face of it we are denying the people of the islands their own sovereignty - surely they have the right to choose to take control of their own sovereignty.

Regards the Chagossians, they don't want Mauritius any more than they wanted us and have thus far been excluded from any negotiations.
Now in breaking news this morning the new Maurtian PM isn't happy with aspects of the deal.

Most people don’t care. That’s the reality of it. Rightly or wrongly it has no relevance to day-to-day lives. The only way you can get bothered by it is by letting the media tell you you should. I’d predict if you did a poll a solid 80% of voters would have no knowledge or interest.

It's a minor foreign affairs issue now, but when our supposed closest ally rocks up and says, 'you're not doing that lads', and we have no choice but to accept it, It becomes something much bigger.
