The 'ball in play' timing system gets rid of nearly all of this (see USA sport for examples, but I am not claiming that they are totally free of any timing issues and they keep fiddling with rules to try and make it better - but they are light years ahead of us in managing this).
I would love to see historical ball in play stats to get a better understanding of this and this may find an 'ideal' time for a game.
Good point about historical ball in play stats. That's obviously what I was referring to in relation to the 66 Cup final. There are enough historical live TV matches available from the 70s onwards to get a reasonable idea of how the stats have changed.
I've got no proplem with technology being used. Some interpretation would be needed, but let's face it, we've all seen players 'injured' off the pitch who then agonisingly, and totally predictably, roll onto the pitch to prevent the game restarting. Instant booking if I was reffing, but how many refs actually take that action? Next to none.
Something definitely needs to be done, because 80% of matches in the Championship become an absolute stop/start dirge as soon as one side or the other gets their noses in front.
