Just polished off a francesinha sandwich and a pint of Superbock and I wanted to cry when it was finished.

Who’d have thought a sandwich of thick toasted bread, beef steak, pork steak, chorizo, spicy sausage, ham with melted cheese and a fried egg on top, served on french fries and covered in a spicy beer and tomato sauce could be so delicious.

If anyone feels the need to attempt this culinary delight locally look up Porto Douro in Solihull. I don’t think they call it the francesinha but it nearly killed me when i tried it. Thanks for reminding me SW4 and it sounds like you’re still living the dream - well done mate.

We went to Porto for New Year a few years back. Live bands in the main square, big firework display, great.Did the FC Porto stadium tour, brilliant, watched a video of them hammering Wolves in about 1975.
Love Portugal anyway, Lisbon nice also.
First time went was to Figuera Da Foz, halfway between the two. Were the only English people there! Huge beaches with floodlit football pitches on them, friendly people, cheap, brilliant.

Love a francesinha, though I feel the geography of Porto makes it more viable. Need something to fill you up after walking up all those bloody hills.

Went there with some Portuguese friends from Coimbra. Very old school, very local. We passed a castle (name escapes me) where when they were invaded by the Moors they felt all hope was lost they decided to kill all the women and children to stop them falling into the victors’ hands. They only then went and won the battle…

Is there a francesinha vegan option?

I did see them on a menu in places - feels sacrilege!

I’ve drank a LOT of port today, and the man said it was good for your gut due to the fermentation so I’m sure it’s all balanced out OK.

You might want to get a second opinion on that. I bet he didn’t take your blood pressure.
