Derby memories

That cup game in 78 was all ticket so, terrace wise, we definitely had a specific end (well, side). For a schoolkid like myself, seeing us in the yellow and green strip for the first time was special. The kit positively gleamed under the lights, giving off an air of magical enchantment.

I was at that. Live on Central on a Sunday wor it

It was. We always seemed to get beat when Central showed us back then. I remember losing home and away to Forest that season too in front of the cameras. Although we beat the Dings of course.

We were excellent away at Forest. Ashcroft murdered Pearce. They got away with one that day

Any other live games in 93/94?

Pompey away last day was on the box i think? I didn't watch it as i was there.

Wasn't the FA Cup loss at Halifax live on Sky? I was there for that aswell. The Shay on a damp Sunday in November. Living the dream Big Grin

I recall a home game against them when John Candy had just died. They were handing out free papers and his photo was on the front, and people were making confetti out of them.

Can't remember the score though.

That was it, a Wednesday night. Like many baggies we were drinking in a pub on the outskirts of Derby on the Saturday when the news came over the game was postponed. What a cup run that was.

I remember that one, absolutely packed in like sardines. No chance of moving If your view was blocked but I remember the atmosphere was electric.

I think the Halifax defeat was when we managed to get knocked out of the FA Cup twice in the same year.

Anybody see it and can agree/disagree with or give their opinion of the decision?

I wasn't there, but you are right about Willie having a late goal chalked off for offside. There is a photo in the Albion News of Willie leaping in delight after his shot hit the back of the net.

Press reports:

Johnston seemed to have won the game with a magnificent 20 yard right foot shot when Mr Richardson discovered, to Albion's fury and my great surprise, that Regis was offside.

Albion seemed to have won the match with only four minutes to go. Scotland winger Willie Johnston smacked a thundering 30 yarder home. But referee Derek Richardson ruled Regis, who was at least 20 yards wide away, offside. Said Albion manager Ronnie Allen "There would have been a riot if that had happened at the other end". And even the Doc admitted "It was a fair goal."

Unlucky Regis was to blame for title chasing Albion not lifting both points in the 85th minute.
The talented coloured striker was ruled to be in an offside position when Albion's Johnston cracked home and unstoppable 30 yarder. It was a decision that angered manager Ronnie Allen who said "All Regis did was was to race in to the goalkeeper to wait for the rebound. lf that had been against Derby, there would have been a riot. And we should have had a penalty when Cunningham had his ankle tapped when he was clean through."

I was at the Baseball Ground two years later when Ally Brown had a perfectly good goal disallowed. One minute in at:

I was at the 3-2 defeat at the Baseball Ground, September 78. Our first defeat of the season.
Only other time I went there was a League Cup defeat in 1989

I was at that one and saw it on the box afterwards. Ridiculous decision.

The 3-2 win in the cup in 78, couldn't get a ticket with our fans so went in their end behind the goal, quite a few Baggies in there and a bit fiesty at full time, blooming great night though.
