I rate all the players we’ve brought in & they will improve the squad (& I fully expect us to finish top 4 now)

.....but it is hard to understand what the clubs long term strategy is now - we didn’t spend big in the Prem, we’re not financially crippled, so why can’t we find the right balance? Go up & I doubt we’ll compete as we’ll have to replace more than half the squad, stay down & it’ll be more loans

....but perhaps that’s football nowadays?

I would think some of the loans will be converted to perms if we go up.

Gayle, Johansen , Holgate and Murphy possibly.

Those 4 would cost in the region of £60m. Can't see us forking out that kind of dough but you never know.

Gayle can be negotiated with Rondon - £0
Johansen - out of contract at Fulham - Free
Holgate - £7 to 10mill
Murphy- Depends on his spell with us. Toon payed £14M for him 2 years ago.

I suspect Holgate more like £15m in today’s market, and Murphy currently £10-£12m. Agree re Gayle/Rondon and Johansen.

I’d expect Rondon to be worth more than Gayle as a more proven PL player, which could get us a discount on Murphy if it was something we wished to pursue.

And if we sold Burke for £10m that would be a net cash outlay of around £15m to sign those 4 players.

Amazing to think that between Rondon and Burke we have c£25m tied up in 2 players not currently available to us!  Oh, plus Nyom who is also ours!

and if my auntie had bollocks...

If we get promoted, I'd quite like us to hold onto Rondon... if we fail to go up, a swap deal for Gayle and Murphy would be more than adequate - neither of those two have really proven they can cut it in the PL, whereas Rondon looks set to net 10 for a struggling Newcastle side.

Gayle is worth about £10m in the current market, and at 28 it's only going downhill... Murphy cost £12m, and hasn't pushed on... even at 29, with 12months on his deal that's a fair swap for Rondon if he goals keep Newcastle up!

Values are only partially attributable to ability.  Remaining length of contract is also a key factor and Rondon is out of contract in June 2020
