This I get, but I said at the time what would they have done if the ball was clearly nestled in the net but Hawkeye didn't signal the goal..it would have been given by the referee despite the ruling on the use of Hawkeye so ultimately its sits with the ref and he could have taken a look and established Hawkeye was not functioning

Exactly. He should have been told by VAR that it was a goal and to look at the screen then award the goal.
