Roger Dean's album artwork for Yes was pretty good, and The Grateful Dead had some absolute purlers of album covers.

On the subject of album covers there was a thing on Radcliffe & Maconie a while back, can you think of an album cover by a “proper “ act - ie not Des O’Connor, Nolan Sisters etc - where the artist(s) are smiling? Only one I could think of was Please Please Me.

Kraftwerk - Autobahn

The The - Mind Bomb

Primal Scream - Screamadelica

Eric Clapton - Backless

Which is the obvious winner.

I thought the standard answer to this question is "In the Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson.
"Burnin'" by the Wailers is a personal fave - the Zippo version

Long before the days of Photoshop that WYWH cover: according to Roger Waters they did actually have to set fire to a live person (under controlled conditions, obviously).
