Good old xG

I thought we'd done well in the xG lately and the stats are quite amazing.

We've 'won' the xG battle in all our last 8 games:
Soton (a)
Sheff Utd (h)
Hull (a)
Bristol (h)
QPR (h)
Swans (a)
Leics (a)
Boro (h)

some decent teams in there too. Our results in these... 2 wins and 6 defeats  Sad

Does this give us some hope?

I think we can safely say XG is a load of utter bollocks… the same people who used to point out our possession stats 15yrs ago have now turned to this ludicrous methodology of determining if we did well.

XG is a useful stat, like all stats, when used in conjunction with others to draw a picture.

There is only one standalone stat in football that has any worth on it's own, the final score.

The only figures that matter is 2 wins out of 8 that’s relegation form

We've let in 13 goals in that period but have an xG against of under 7. Suggests opposition finishing has been far better than average and/or our goalkeeping has been bad.

So many factors influence xG, as Birdman says, it’s useful, but not in isolation.

In our last 8 games we should have taken more points, and much like many games this season, we’ve not been that bad, but we make too many errors leading to goals. The lack of structure, the constant changing of a defence, the holes we have in midfield, and 2 underperforming keepers have been our undoing.

In January we simply have to sign another keeper.

Isn’t that blatantly obvious though? The opposition have been scoring decent goals, we have been missing similar if not easier and more chances and we all know our goalkeepers are struggling.

LOLLLLL. love this anti XG stuff. It is a metric that shows how shit we have converted against expectations and shows why we are where we are in the league as we don’t convert close to expectations. Let’s hope we get a bit closer in the next three games or out perform XG (which we rarely do) or we will be right in the thick of the relegation battle. Is Lee Ashcroft still free to play against Pompey away as we could do with a goal off someone’s shoulder to be XG.

You'd hope that at least the opposition revert to the average and stop scoring as many of the half chances they seem to be doing at present. I'd agree we could do with an experienced keeper if we can afford it as these figures (as well as our eyes  Wink ) show we need it

It is blatantly obvious and one way of expressing that data into a workable expression is to show it in a simple formula.  It’s called xG.

It’s clearly a good data tool as we all know we’ve been missing decent chances and chucking them in the other end.  This simply puts a number to that so you can compare to other teams and past/future performances.

You’re shouting at a cloud Dekka.
