Strikes me that for a good few years now there has been a losing mentality and a culture of failure and malaise around the club. Corberan seemed to be the only individual we had who could make any dent in it, but it's been there since Bilic gave everyone the Covid break off.
We've had a healthy turnover of players, multiple managers and coaches (again Corberan seemed to be able to break through it) and change of ownership, and yet it remains.
What's causing it?

No there hasn't. We were in the playoffs just over a year ago. Corberan leaving and mopping up the mess left by Lai is the reason.

I`ve often wondered this myself. We did seem to keep signing older players, 28 / 29 year olds, or giving blokes that age new 2 year deals.
Some, ( Brunt, Pieters, for example ) were good pros, did others just see us as a last pay day.

As I said in my OP, Corberan was very much the exception.

For any criticism of the owners (or Nestor in particular) there has been a general move away from bringing in much older players or existing player outstaying their welcome. Whilst not all new signings have been a success, the hit rate has been greater than the latter Lai years where we brought in a lot but many were far too old or just not good enough.
This summer will almost certainly see the departure of Wallace, Wildsmith, Dike and Maja when their deals are up. I'd imagine Grant will be offered a new deal and possibly Diakite. The new manager will be left with a small squad but there is some quality in what he have to work with. We do need to bring youngsters through though and Mason, other giving Bostock a few minutes at Millwall, completely failed at that. Even if some of out lads aren't good enough, just by getting some minutes with us and a decent loan spell elsewhere will make them saleable assets. You only have to look at getting £500k for Mo Faal or selling on lads like TGH who probably weren't going to be first teamers. But that is never going to happen if we point blank refuse to ever give them a go.

You get what you pay for and this marries up with ever decreasing revenue / ability to pay for things..

I think there's maybe just a clear lack of no nonsense leaders around the place.
Even hearing Jayson talk after the game, who is supposedly a leader - he sounded battered and defeated.
Like in that changing room after the game - I would have ideally wanted someone to grab SFIFJ and Maja by the throats and explain to them how they ruined 90 minutes are hard work by 11 other players.
But maybe that's not the way to win friends and influence in modern football idk.

These guys are clearing up the mess left by an utterly incompetent regime.
