The View from the Opposition - Middlesbrough Away
#1
Two forums, with plenty of food for thought, but I'm not sure it will shift anyone from their previous opinion of last night, no matter what that opinion was.

Prematch

Note, the Oneboro forum have also linked to our discussion on their bored.

The Baggies are struggling to find the back of the net. They began the season with a hard fought 1-0 win at the Hawthorns against Blackburn Rovers. Against newly promoted Wrexham, they beat the Welshmen 3-2, but struggled to stop the Reds from scoring two past them. The second goal was conceded on 90+5 minutes. It appears the Baggies have a problem lasting the full game and likely to concede late in games. Young Manchester United loanee, 21-year-old, Toby Collyer is expected to be a key player for the Baggies this season, making his first appearance from the bench at The Racecourse Ground. He was originally at Spurs, but signed for the Red Devils. In the 24 / 25 season, he made 13 appearances in the Premier League. Ostensibly a defensive midfielder, Head Coach Ryan Mason expects him to play further forward and has high hopes for him. Left-back, Callum Styles, quoted in his pre-match comments, appears to be talking up his team's prospects at the hallowed shrine on Friday night. Despite having conceded on the 84th minute at home to the lowly Rams, last time out, Styles believed the scoreline didn't reflect the game, but in this league the key is to play badly and still win, or at least get a draw.
Alex Mowatt and Jed Wallace are still key players at the Hawthorns and, of course, former Boro loanee Sammy Illing-Junior is amongst their ranks. Twelve players left the club in the summer, including Right-winger Tom Fellows to Southampton for a reported £9M, and Darnell Furlong joined Ipswich in a £4M deal.
Nine players have come in, with the most expensive being Aune Heggebo, for £5.5M from Brann FC in Norway. Midfielder Isaac Price is Albion's current top scorer, with three out of their total of six league goals scored so far.
* Former Boro player, James Morrison, is now the First Team Coach at West Brom, having spent 12 years as a player in the black country.

It could be argued WBA have had the easier start to the season, having so far played Wrexham, Blackburn and Derby who are all bottom half, but they did beat Stoke who are second so they can be dangerous. Attacking midfielder Isaac Price is the dangerman this season, with three goals so far, whilst LW Michael Johnston also has three goal involvements.

West Brom, not so much scoring 6 in 5 games, with an xg of 6.0

West Brom don't score too many and looks like Derby did a smash and grab job on them last week. Had a read of their forum and some suggesting they will lets us enjoy the possession and try and pick us off. I hope so, if they let us settle early unlike Preston then i see a Boro Win.

WBA are a very decent team. I think we'll grind out a hard fought win though, 2-1.

We will see the return of Illing jnr and Mowatt.
Issac Price is building a good rep in scouting circles and is my one to watch in this one!

Shame we couldn’t get Isaac Price when available, on a good run of scoring for NI.

As long as it keeps the momentum going, West Brom are no mugs but I think we could beat them, but I’d obviously be happy with a draw.
No god given right to steam roller any team in this league. Stoke lost to them so I think picking up a point isn’t horrendous

We have a good recent record against WBA, haven't lost at home to them since 2019 and have won the last three home and away without conceding a goal. WBA though look good this year.  It looks like they've really focused on upgrading their defence over the summer. So far it looks like their home record is letting them down. They've scored early goals in both their away wins so maybe they'll try to catch us cold...This one feels like another 2-2 draw. We were wobbly against Preston and I think WBA have enough quality to put us under pressure.

I'd take a draw at The Hawthorns, but at home, we should be aspiring to beat all comers

Won last 3 against them without conceding -

Middlesbrough vs West Bromwich Albion (1-0)

usually seem to do alright against these I reckon.
plus I think he's a good manager to get out of the way before everyone works out what we always do, as think he one that learns quick

I noticed Price scored for NI from a corner last week, they lofted the ball over the packed box and Price had space at the far side of the 6 yard box to slam it home. Great goal but I wouldn't be surprised if WBA tried the same tactic as he was really composed and took it well.

Craig Dawson (Ex WBA, West Ham and Wolves) was the one who stood out for me on the free agents. However, his wage demands in might be out of our reach.

Anyway, West Brom don't score many or create many chances, and don't give up many chances either.
0-0 all over it.

WBA Diakite in for M Johnson, but Johnson was playing left and Diakite is down as a DM but Mowatt and Molumby remain the 2 normal DM's so have they changed formation for 3 DM's or just put Diakite on the left ?

First Half

Oof good save Brynn. WBA showing a lot attacking intent

The Baggies on it from minute one

Jed Wallace? He must be about 60 now?

Had a feeling this would be another tough game. West Brom definitely looking like they think they can win this.
Would not be too unhappy with another point tonight.

Good quality game so far.
Two good teams. Weve edged it

Oddly enough, I think West brom have started to try and hold on to the ball rather than get caught out in a turnover.

I think they are trying to play back into the game.

Will need to be something creative to break this lot down

They;re good. V.well organised

I think both teams look good. High standard. Not open but tempo is good and lots of good quality. It could be a PL match.

West Brom look hard to breakdown, the whole team is parking the bus!

Two decent teams on show. This will be a very difficult game to win.

They are going to be really hard to breakdown and pull everyone back hoping to push on our defenders and bit them on the break or a set piece .

Can’t give them time to get back as they’re well organised by the time they get set.

1 - 0

The ghost of Pulis finally pays off

Is that the first time we’ve scored from a long throw?
I know we tried under Pulis but I don’t remember them ever being successful

Will be interesting to see if WBA change things, they've been very conservative.
- Hopefully should open the game up a bit

Two very defensively good teams on display tonight so it'll be a question of whose flair players make the bigger impact.

Think we have been really poor. Amazing that we are winning 1 nil.
- None haven’t. We’ve been ok. We lack the final touch around their box but we’re restricting them to absolutely nothing. WBA are a good team. THey keep the ball well but create nothing thanks to our closing down.

Sorry if it has been said. We are being dominated in midfield. Needs addressing at half time.
- Not really, we coasted through that half

Half Time

I think we're comfortable they can have the ball. doing absolutely nothing with it

Good game of football. West Brom look decent. Their press is very good. We have more quality than they do though.

Not unhappy with that. West Brom look like one of the better teams we'll play this season,

How nice is it that we’ve been poor off the ball and yet they’ve not had a sniff really?

They've had lots of possession but done nowt with it. Think if they make attacking subs it could open up for us

They are gonna need to expand their play now; they just wanted to stifle us and they did a good job but with a genuine goalscorer in Strelec we can penetrate teams like this….

Been impressed with WBA so far. Look great without the ball and have pressed us intelligently. That said we've controlled the tempo well when we've had it. I fancy Silvera against their RB too.

I disagree a bit with even game. I think we are clearly the better team. If you look beyond the fast start from west Brom. We have been better than them.

Been impressed with the WBA press though. Surely they can’t keep that up for 90mins

I think it just seems a bit worse as they've had a lot of the ball in the middle third, but I think it's as they have us outnumbered. The problem for them though is they can't break from middle third to final third as we're really solid and have numerical advantage.

Not bad. Good game between two decent teams.

Decent enough half against tough opposition. Hope the lads are up for an equally tough 2nd half. Don't think WBA are the kind of team to give up easily.
As usual we're just lacking a bit of composure in the penalty area. Final balls going Great to see us restrict West Brom to a couple of hopeful efforts. Brynn not had too much to do so far. Hope for the same 2nd half.

So, how's it going?
- Good goal forged in the bowels of Pulis. They've been very well organised.
- Pretty boring, we’ve barely broke a sweat, the goal is the only thing that’s really happened
- its been a game of hard graft. Two good teams largely cancelling each other out. Genuine scoring chances few & far between.
- Hard watch. West Brom dominating. Apart from the first minute havent yet created anything but seem to have too much space in Midfield and in and around our box. Couple of range efforts flown over. Good time to put money on a West Brom win.

West Brom will have to go more attacking second half. Hopefully will open up more space for us.

They are controlling midfield- but thankfully their final ball isn't all that.

They've pressed us really hard and keep breaking through our midfield.
Probably reckon they've shaded the game but we've scored.

Very even game so far, with neither side having many chances.
They had one huge one in the first minute, we had the goal.

Two tough teams slugging it out with both defence’s dominant.

Putting 10 men behind the ball is easy. How many times have WBA looked like scoring? They'll have to sacrifice a defensive minded player and it'll open up more for us.

A bit lucky to be winning but they are a very solid team and hard to play against.
hopefully we can get a bit more control in midfield,

Second Half

Price is their leading striker on 2 goals. Too close for comfort, that.

WBA  upping the anti

Need to get hold of midfield ( repeat)

Oof - early warning from West Brom there. Brilliant cross but luckily no-one got on it.

Hopefully we hit them on counter. West Brom are up for this

WBA targeting Sami and getting balls into the box through Wallace

Weak. This is only going one way atm.

They've thrown caution to the wind a bit here, a bit earlier than expected to this degree. Going to be quite open this half and could be a bit nervy if we don't get a second soon.
- Yeah they look a different team.
As much as we praise Rob for making early changes and tweaks, mason has clearly made his own changes in approach

They are getting right back in it

WBA seem to have found some space about us

Though I would say West Brom look like the best coached team we’ve played so far this season. They’ve played well.

Oof - Good shot Nypan...good save from the keeper!

Good save!

2 - 0

A bit against the run of play but who cares!

Great finish Sane…..West Brom remind me of us under Carrick!
- I thought that several times during the match.

Keep Johnstone under control. Rest seem to have blown themselves out.

I swear that West Brom have had the same players for like the last 10 years.

Thuggish challenge on Morris by Johnston.

2 -1

Wtf just happened

The lad who scored for them had blood on his scalp, possibly from the Edmundson collision. How have none of the officials seen this, or none of our players pointed it out.

Full Time

We were the better team by far.

For their goal, I was absolutely sure their played kicked it straight out for a very obvious throw in to us? Next thing they were taking a throw, and scoring?
Maybe i missed something, couldn’t get to the game so watching on TV.

felt cheated when they scored because it wasn't even on the live feed as they were going through replays. Thats nonsense. Felt like not a goal that suddenly was a goal , like when you playing cards with your mam as a kid and from nowhere she goes gin rummy and takes the pot , and you like what ?

As an aside…..I couldn’t believe he took their two best players off.

Can we stop doing the ' a year ago we would have lost' since the factuality shows we went to West Brom in the 8th game last season and literally won 1-0. We did the double on the Baggies last season. Half job done now.
- The same fixture last year was 1-0, with both teams pretty even

They were a better team than we've played at home this season, but was surprised they even scored one. Lots of ineffective prettyball.
- Unlike Carrick's Boro however, I think they will keep their fair share of clean sheets. Mepham and Phillips are a very good CB pairing for the Championship.
- We have plenty of bogey teams; maybe WBA is one of the few who we always seem to edge out. But they are a good side and I think they'll be non lower than 8th, but 6th is more likely.

The winger WBA brought on was decent. Where have they got him from?
- I swear he was at Blackburn, I remember him looking good against us in a Mowbray team
- Celtic wasn't it?
- if you mean Mikey Johnston, he started at Celtic but is /was very injury prone.

I'm not counting their goal because it was useless and they took it whilst no one was looking. 2:0
- I think that's fair enough like

Very tough opposition and I'd have taken a point before kick-off, but again the lads found a way to get the win. West Brom never eased up though and caught Boro napping a bit for their late consolation. Great finish to be fair.

What a great three points. Very tough game. WBA are a decent side. If they can get a bit more quality in the final third they are top 6 material.

Good performance against a good team, pity about the one conceded but another 3pts on the board.

Very tough game.

not everything went to plan, the Baggies are a good side and had us under a fair bit of pressure

Had a bit of a nosey on the West Brom board and my god they’re deluded. There’s no way I’ve just watched the same game as them. Talking about how ordinary we are and how they controlled the entire game and were unlucky with poor finishing.
I thought they looked absolutely shyte to be honest. Might not have been our best performance, but I thought we were comfortably the better side despite playing half the game with a makeshift back 5 consisting of a winger playing wing-back and two full backs playing CB.
And that 2nd goal shows exactly why we were the better side. Dragging them all over with quick movement and passing. Never once saw that from them. Their goal came completely against the run of play, via the one idea they had all game which was lumping it into the box. Turgid football from them.
- They should have been 0-1 up after 30 seconds, but after that they did nothing for the rest of that half. Pushed us back for most of the 2nd half and it was annoying to watch us be so sloppy with the ball and give it back to them.
That said they were mainly buzzing around our box and not really doing much, even sky Wernt taking notice when their goal went in.
I can see why they feel they maybe deserved more but they were mainly good at pressing and defending with their main attacking route being get it in the box and hope for chaos. Didn’t see the fuss about that Price either, feels like he’s bought into his own hype trying spectacular stuff.
- I thought they were slightly better than us up until we scored tbh but after that I never felt worried, possibly more down to the trust I have in the team than wba's performance though.
They did play like I expected us to play under Edwards though; defensive, one paced and a bit hoofbally. Thankfully I was very wrong.
They're a decent solid team but I think they're going to be a hard watch for their fans if that's Mason's style.
- Even then we could’ve felt hard done by, just ping-ponged in the box - at least it fell to Phillips and not their striker.

Brilliant result. Was always going to be a tough watch. WBA are basically a Pulis regen team with 7 or 8 players very defensive minded (and decent quality for level).

those saying west brom were better at any point are wrong imo. better at what exactly? they were not better in any department other than passing sideways when having possession going nowhere. we let them do it. second half if we lost the ball everyone of our players ran back 20 yards quickly to get into a solid defensive shape. we controlled the whole game.
what we did struggle with though was breaking through their press. we were what looked like to me. trying to draw them out letting them press then spring on them and break in numbers. but we kept failing to do it and losing the ball. west brom found a way of getting the ball behind our cm's and gaining ground and possession on us. but they never hurt us. i was never worried at any point in the game by them. we kept them at arms length because imo they were not very dangerous and we could nullify them and get the 3 points. if they had more of an attacking threat or were more dangerous. i don't think we would have sat off them and let them come at us. we would have pressed them from the front higher up.

WBA were us last season, plenty of possession, doing nothing with it.

I thought West Brom looked like the best of the 6 teams we've played so far, tbh.
They weren't the better team, but it was a very even match and they had a number of chances they should/could have done better with.

I thought West Brom were really good at exposing our weaker areas (left back) by doubling up on Silvera to cross from wide areas. I thought Sammy did as good as he could have done, but there was a clear area for them to exploit.

Ryan Mason thinks our opener came from a foul throw because Edmundson had one foot in the air.
Watching it back, it looks like Edmundson's toe was still on the ground until after he'd released the ball, so I'd say it's fine.

Watched in the pub yesterday with a mate who's a Baggies fan.
He was waxing lyrical about us; adamant we're going to win the league.

Good read Squid.

Think most of their thoughts are pretty correct. We press well and are set up defensively well, but we have no ability to transition from middle third to final third with any quality or tempo.
