Team v 'Boro

Lots of good discussion on various freds so though I would start this fred to get it all in one place.

I would go;

(Out of possession)

Griffiths
Campbell Phillips Mepham Styles
SIL Price Collyer MJ
Heggebo Maja

(In possession)

Griffiths
Campbell Phillips Mepham
Collyer Styles
SIL Price Maja MJ
Heggebo

Price and Maja playing on similar lateral channels in possession but in the half spaces on either side. Heggebo staying central and high. I am sick of seeing our wide players get the ball and be isolated against two defenders because of our lack of balance. Neither fullback really gets past, either under or overlapping, our wide players, but our midfielders don't get close enough to them to allow quick interchanges in passing because the "double pivot" is too rigid.

Try and get SIJ and Price joining up regularly and Maja and MJ on the other side, with Heggebo being the focal point. Campbell can maintain a good solid base by being the third CB and Styles can move into CM with Collyer in possession to help keep us solid. It's not really any different tactically to what we have been doing but we have one more creative/attacking player in that structure.

Campbell at this stage is similar to what Dawson was when he started to play fullback although maybe slightly quicker. He is not a natural passer of the ball yet as a natural fullback is and the moves slows down or stops when the ball comes to him. Defensively he seems ok. We purchased a new right back so up to the manager on who’s best to play.

I'd continue with the lineup that worked brilliantly at Stoke, and played well on Saturday. No knee jerk reactions are needed.

I would agree with this - maybe just changes a bit sooner.

I watched first half of the Preston v Boro game on Saturday and they, Boro, are a classic high energy, physical, aggressive championship side. IMO pulling out M & M from the midfield would lead to us being over-run, this is not the place for any major experimentation unless we think it's a freebie as we're playing top of the league away from home and can't expect any points. The only change I would make to Saturday is to bring in Junior for Jed, as I simply don't think Jed has the gas for 90 minutes and I'd rather see him used as a sub. They are not a high scoring team, they have 9 goals over 5 games and their top scorer Conway has 2 goals, so I'd set up to not concede, let them dominate possession, and hopefully we do to them what Derby did to us on Saturday.

I think we'll be unchanged tbh.

Only real takeaways from Saturday are that SIJ cannot play on the right, unless he's willing to beat his fullback rather than float hopeless crosses from deep and that we need to get Maja on the pitch for more than 10 minutes.

There's a slight argument to have a look at Gilchrist, but from everything I've read he's going to be as awkward going forward as the Chester (PA) Cafu.

Agree, unchanged. Saturday just wasn't our day, no need to throw the baby out with the bath water.
Molumby had 2 excellent chances, Jed 1 and Price was a foot away from a worldie. Add to that Campbell's header that hit Mowatt and their back header that went straight to the keeper when a foot either side would have been an og.
The defence got caught out for the goal and it should have been saved.
Nothing in the analysis has that anything like a 0-1.

I wouldn't say Molumby's were 'great chances', Bob. They were first time hits with plenty of bodies between him and the goal. But I think they do prove my point a little bit. Our chances fell to, Molumby and Jed who got their from midfield/wife. Imagine those chances falling to Price or Maja. Those low xG chances are more likely to be successful if you get better attacking players on the end of them.

Then with better balance to the attack we would be more likely to create overloads to allow us to create better quality chances with better quality finishers being around to put them away too.

Let me dig my PS3 and FIFA '18 out to see if I still have the magic after all those years.
