Felt a bit of a trudge doing this and then I look at the Derby forum, only to feel somewhat of a Droste effect, as the forum has a "The View from the Outside" thread.
However, it isn't as good (or as thorough) as the ones on this bored.
As I did with Ipswich, I fancy us to kick start this next block of games with another positive result. They’ve had an excellent start however under Ryan Mason’s stewardship so will be a tough test.
Tough test and our recent good run against them will be at risk for this one. Baggies without defeat this season. Us without a win.
Draw written all over it
If it was the other way round, wouldn’t you be predicting a nailed on away win?
We will beat the Baggies - again!
On paper another tough test, and one I wouldn’t be expecting us to get anything out of. But, it is West Brom, so maybe we can continue our curse over them?
West Brom will be a completely different proposition next week. They have been completely revitalized since Ryan Mason took over the reigns there. I also feel a bit uneasy when I see quite a few of our lot getting just a wee bit cocky about the fixture. That said we are due our first win and I am praying you’re right and it’s an away win for us and the good form against them continues. But I can’t shake the feeling that next week we’ll see a different outcome. suspect this fixture will be a completely different game than our win last season. But I’m predicting a draw.
WBA get right up my nose, but my accountant baggie says we’re are their bogey side. So I’m thinking another shock.
West Brom will lineup with a 4-2-3-1 with Heggebo up top who is a good hold up striker but Sanderson will battle with him which is what he's best at. Isaac Price will be West broms 10 who is a great player but Ozoh and Travis will be able to bully him and if we get on top of that front two we can nullify their whole game plan from open play.
At right back They'll most likely use George Campbell, he's naturally a centre back so wont like being taken on in isolation out wide, Clark will be very useful as he will pull him narrow and allow elder space down the left to pick out a cross. Apart from them few battles I've highlighted I do think it'll be tough battle but not a monstrous task. Max Johnston will have a tough game if he comes up against Mikey Johnston who is a very tricky direct winger, will be a good indicator to see Max's defensive ability
Where then I think we could hurt them is with Brewster and Johnston in attack, Brewster is excellent at finding space and if he pulls to the right where Mowatt isn't the most mobile of midfielders he should find pockets. Also Max Johnston getting forward will have joy as Callum styles isn't at his best as a left back in a 4 and Mikey Johnston isn't exactly the hardest worker.
My pessimism about Saturday’s fixture is that at some point our good run against them will end. Past results count for nothing - just mere history and personally I never take much notice of them. Current form on the other hand is more relevant. When we played them last season they’d just lost their manager after our home fixture on Boxing Day and were fading and in faltering form under Tony Mowbray when we met them again in April. And he was sacked within hours of that result.
Under Ryan Mason West Brom are rejuvenated and unbeaten with three wins and a draw and have the wind in their sails early season. Whereas, although we look to be improving, we have stuttered our way to 2 points from 12 and winless in the league and have been far from convincing. Although I expect us to improve as the season goes on and the new additions gel together.
On the plus side we have more players back from injury and new players to come into the squad. Plus Eustace and his staff have had two more weeks to work with the players.
But I just have this horrible feeling our good run against them is about to hit the buffers.
As for WBA, they've been defensively sound but still haven't found their right mix going forward. They've got forward problems with Maja and Dike having fitness problems whilst also selling their whole right hand side in Furlong and Fellows. They were a little fortuitous to beat Stoke with an uncharacteristic goalkeeping blunder from Johannson gifting them the winner.
Can't believe West Brom haven't sold out. Home game after an international break off the back of a flying start and its their 125 year anniversary game. Not the biggest of Stadiums either, id be embarrassed if we didn't sell out on a big anniversary game after a great start.
Just arrived in West Bromwich , looking forward to what should be a good game and the usual 3pts for the Rams
Why have they put their silly flags on the away seats?
Way too much space in the area for WBA to get a shot off. Fortunately straight at Zetterstrom.
Free shot from a cross there with no one marking. Lucky escape for us
Baggies on top, but sounds like a library.
Well we are on the same pitch as West Brom, but that’s about it.
Already playing so deep. WBA loads of time on the ball
As previously this season we are lulling WBA into a false sense of security ?
Wba close again.
Wba are shutting our forward passes down effectively at the moment
West Brom are making sure our right side is blocked off when we have the ball and leave space in that left hand corner.
Feel like my eyes are bleeding
Sitting everyone in behind the ball yet they are playing through us easily.
We always play like this against west brom. Second best and we win. No panicking just yet.
There’s no doubt these are a class team but we’re making them look like prime Barca
Lucky to come off level at half time.
Not only second to every 50/50, but also every 60/40 and even some 70/30s.
So West Brom are celebrating 125 years at the Hawthorns. Derby have made it seem like that first half was 126 years long!
They’ve had a lot of the ball (71% to our 29%) and 7 shots, but only 1 on target and no clear cut chances according to the half time stats. As lacklustre as we are, they’ve not done much with their dominance.
Sounds as if we've done well to reach half-time, 0-0. This will be eating into the brains of the West Brom fans and players, who know how much they struggle to beat us. The longer the game goes on, the more nervous they will become.
WBA certainly have us worked out at present, luckily they haven't fully tested Zetters despite getting progressively closer
West Brom have correctly assessed they dont need to shuffle across when the ball goes to our left hand side or track Adams. They are very happy to let the ball go into that left hand corner and block space elsewhere and stay compressed in our right.
Needed half time as they were looking more and more like scoring that last 15.
We’re not losing away from home against a good side for this level, who for all their possession haven’t actually done anything. That’s a positive for me.
2 minutes into the second half and they’ve had 2 chances already this will be a great 45 mins
How did that not go in, very lucky on that corner.
So lucky they just didn't score
Being completely overran now.
They're slowly getting closer
That's got to be a red for that tackle on Morris. Foot was off the floor!
- Styles looked relieved when the yellow came out
I'm actually quite looking forward to the massive meltdown when they eventually score
Nasty tackle from Styles on Morris earns him a booking
You can tell it’s bad when the pigeons decide to end it all.
That bird is the Most exciting thing that’s happened all game
Cracking save from Zetterstrom!
Good stop from JWZ, got down low to his right and pushes Molumby’s shot out for a corner that comes to nowt.
Can we play West Brom every week
Baggies fans must absolutely hate us
West Brom will be wondering what curse we have on them
Shot either smashed against the bar for West Brom or tipped onto it by JWZ.
How is our crossbar still standing
Whoever put that goal together did a good job, it's still standing
What curse do we hold over WBA? Madness.
Death, taxes, beating west brom
Lets all laugh at West Brom
We were so poo but still managed to beat them at home
West Bromwich Albion it's happened again. What a team.
Unreal how we keep beating WBA.
What sort of horrible voodoo did someone do to West Brom, specifically when they have to play us?
Great result. baggies will be sick to the stomach after that, but I couldn't care less. We played much better at Ipswich and got sucker punched to deny a win, got one today which we probably didn't deserve. Funny old game.
I like West Brom as a club but they must hate us by now.
- They have done, ever since the play off final.
- A Baggies supporter friend (who sadly died this year in his mid 80s) said that along with lots of his fellow fans they felt that justice prevailed when the tertiary team claimed the third promotion place.
Great win, not pretty but we scored more goals than our opposition and conceded nothing. This is how the likes of Burnley got promoted.
View from the Outside thread will make an interesting read. Unbelievable
You doubters, as one of their lads said on twitter:
"They could put a team of traffic cones out against us and still win"
I can see a bit why we payed what we did for Agyemang. Its rare to see a player at this level with that level of physicality and with genuine pace that is halfway decent technically. I was expecting strong not completely bullying Nat Phillips strong.
Not sure if it's been mentioned but their last 3 defeats have all been against us.
I didn't mind them until the PO final. One of the lads where I worked at the time was a Baggies fan, and he didn't stop whining about how they'd deserved to go up for god knows how many years. I didn't mind initially, but the following year they went up and we embarrassed ourselves so it got real old, real fast at that point.
Petition to move our home games to The Hawthorns. It's a fortress.
That was absolutely horrible to watch(...)We did actually restrict West Brom to very little, but even so they had either 2 or 3 chances which they should have scored from. There was plenty of heroics in defence, and lots of running around further up field, and we did hold it together at the end when West Brom were pushing hard.
West Brom did make things hard for us because the pressed and closed down fiercely all match long, and were very "in your face" with, which seemed to unsettle us, so for much of the match it seemed that they had got into our heads, making us treat them as the better team, so we'd better just do our best and hope to hold on. They also demonstrated that the authorities clampdown on who is allowed to speak to the ref is either a load of hot air, or that the rule is that only the captain from Derby County can do so, but whoever they are playing can surround the ref at will. Come on PGMOL, get your act together.
Slowly got into it 2nd half and it became more even and West Brom a bit devoid of ideas.
Well the hex over the baggies continues ??. Thought we were crap first half, better second half. West Brom were much better than last season and it was nice to actually see a crowd!! That said, while they look a sleek neat and tidy outfit, they didn’t have anyone that really caused us problems. We defended for the most part quite comfortably and I thought they were at their most dangerous after they went behind. No way we deserved to win the game but we were worthy of a point I don’t think as the home side they did enough.
Ultimately we rode our luck and by the end a draw wouldn't have been a complete robbery but lets be honest all 3 were not deserved.. but who cares. !!
Last promotion season was kick started by a win against the baggies wasn’t it?
I think if WBA had a player like Agyemang they might have bagged a couple of goals against us.
- They should have done it without our Agy!
Not long got back from the game , straight in the pub after it had finished , a twenty minute rendition of West Bromwich Albion it’s happened again , to be fair the Baggies fans took it in good spirit , in fact a couple of them said they had written this game off as we always mug them
West Brom would have gone joint top with a win today but we defended as a unit, soaked up pressure and took it chance when it came.
That's six times on the bounce we've beaten them now. We peed on their anniversary celebrations today.
In all competitions since 1888 we've played them 128 times now. Derby come out well on top with W59 D31 L38.
But what is phenomenally outstanding since the First World War is our home record against them. In 34 league games against them since 1920, we've lost 18 at the Hawthorns, winning 11 and drawing five. That's a good away record by any standard.
But our League home record against them in the same period is simply outstanding. In 33 games Derby have won 19, drawn 13 and lost just one; the single defeat was in 2003 at Pride Park in the Championship soon after they'd won promotion from Division One under Gary Megson.
Is this the best home record of one competitive team over another in the upper echelons of English football in over a century of football in terms of the least defeats?
I don't know definitively but as a quick comparison I have looked at how West Brom fared against leading sides in the same period. These are the number of away victories which the Albion achieved at what might be fairly considered to be the leading teams of that 105 years era, compared to their single victory in Derby:
Arsenal 8, Aston Villa 9, Birmingham 17, Chelsea 15, Everton 9, Leeds 10, Liverpool 5, Man City 13, Man Utd 11, Newcastle 13, Notts Forest 18, Sunderland 17, Tottenham 14, Wolves 15.
Should’ve remixed the Nat Phillips song at full time.
Nat Phillips in despair duh duh duh duh duh duh Nat Phillips in despair.
We could of easily of got beaten by a big score if they had there shouting boots on
I sat in the WBA end for this one, as couldn’t get an away ticket so my Baggie mate came up trumps.
FWIW the Baggies fans around me were actually quite complimentary about us and said “we knew exactly how to stifle” them.” They also loved our chant “West Bromwich Albion, it’s happened again” think at this point they’re beyond despair haha
Great day out yesterday always enjoy WBA fans were great as usual,
Just watched a load of other highlights, was looking at the red cards that were given and im still shocked that Styles tackle on Morris from behind was only given a yellow card, was reckless, two footed, from behind and infront of the ref, Lino and 4th official...judging by other officials up and down the country, you have to say Mr Ricardo bottled it.
WBA had won 3 and drawn 1. We beat them at their place.
However, it isn't as good (or as thorough) as the ones on this bored.
