Car Insurance

So, I had notice that my car insurance would auto-renew, but as I got a better deal, I didn't want it. I then got notice that the payment had failed any way as I'd had a new card in the mean time, so job done.

They've now sent me a letter saying I need to cancel it or they'll charge me an admin fee! Anyone else had this, or know if it's possible? Can't Google a straight answer.

If you’re in the cooling off period then no fee should apply. Just tell them you intended to cancel, told them (which clearly you didn’t but they don’t know that), knew that the payment wouldn’t clear anyway and due to the correspondence you (erm… didn’t) send, which you apologise for not getting through.

Just blame the internet.

I'd imagine when you originally first took out the policy there was a little tick box that said something about auto renewal and making a payment from the same card automtically. Most times it's set to auto renew by default and you have to untick it for it not to auto renew.

If this is the case and you haven't told them about going elsewhere, you'll need to let them know otherwise they might class it as a "missed payment".

I had a similar experience with Bank Of Scotland Car Insurance.

I kicked up a fuss and they immediately sorted out the problem and sent me £50

So 17 pints of Bathams Mild paid for.

I did have a chat with one of their bots that said they didn't do price match so I said I'll look elsewhere. That must be recoded somewhere.

There's no way I'll pay anything, just wondered if it was a new dodgy tactic from a dodgy industry.

They should allow you to cancel it, they might try to charge you at first just to be awkward and try and make you stay - if they do send them proof of insurance (Your new document) and ask them to NTU it as you had no intention of renewing with them and tell them you told them this prior to the renewal date. They probably wont want to check their correspondence to see if you did contact them or not.

They sent me a text on 9th July saying "Your insurance policy is due to be cancelled, to avoid this call **** by 8pm today to make payment. As I didn't want to avoid it, I didn't call. Then got another one Monday saying "last chance to cancel"
Seems a bit like the parking scams where they try and scare people into paying an admin fee for something they never wanted. Bastards.

I've just had a discontinuation notice from a "parking fine" that's dragged on for 18 months, so it won't work!  Big Grin

Anyone foolish enough to auto renew anything is begging for a price increase.

Our home insurance has just jumped £100 from last year. Fugg knows what May have caused that but I’m tempted to yank a few tiles off and get the roof redone.

For the first time in ages my house insurance dropped this year, no idea why.
