The Short Blanket
#1
“The ‘short blanket’… if you cover your head, you have your feet cold, but if you cover your feet, you have your head cold.”

Rafa Benitez pointing out that the more risks you take in committing players forward, the more open it will leave you at the back. Whilst if you are too defensive, it leaves you more open to failing to score enough goals.

It always felt like Carlos had the same conundrum and Mogga is finding that out too.

The squad is slowly being updated but we have far too many players that have not been good enough for 3 years, a weak spine and very little up front. Yes, there's talent but it's a very unbalanced overall squad that's very much in transition under the new owners.

Still more than enough to bear Derby and Plymouth though pal

Were way too soft and fragile even before Mogga returned

Carlos protected that softness by ensuring we were organised and had a good defensive shape. Drilled to within an inch. I think we could be in for a difficult 2nd half of the season if Mogga goes too far the other way.

Correct. We finished in the playoffs last season and despite starting the previous season with an utterly clueless manager, were only a hair's breath away from finishing in them during the previous season.

There's always this whimpering about the quality of the team whenever we lose, yet most on here were (rightly) predicting a win beforehand.

This is what we were all saying yesterday during the 'meltdown' - the last manager we had who thought he could get results by just letting our team go and play... Didn't end well did it?

I wouldn't go that far. It'd be disappointing but I wouldn't deem it as a failure considering the fact we've had injuries to key players, lost an excellent manager, and the fact we've had to drastically cut the wage bill of the squad from last year.

There's probably 10 teams fighting for 5th and 6th, we're one of those, obviously.

Mowbray's record in the Championship would suggest he knows what he is doing.

However like any new manager he needs to get to grips with the strengths and weaknesses of the squad he has inherited. It could be a bumpy transition, but I have confidence that Mowbray will do a good job.

I suppose the question is what should be considered as a good job.
