I've seen this phrase pop up a few times on here and I find it very irksome.
The position you are at in the table is the position you are at in the table. You can say a team is doing better/worse than expected, but ultimately, the table doesn't lie and no team was saved from relegation because there was a little meeting after the final day and people decided a team was in a false position.
FWIW, we really were that bad under Bruce and definitely had to start to stink of relegation, especially after that horrendous performance against Blues at home. There was nothing false about our position in the table then.

according to some history there have been teams saved at meetings, after they were promoted from their false positions....
I get what you mean though

Isn't that the epitome of a "false position" though. Bruce had us doing far worse than we should have been, given the squad we had and the quality of those around us. Carlos then came in and proved it right.
I do agree that the table doesn't lie, but the false position line is never meant in a literal sense, it will always be a hypothetical, based on other factors and will therefore be subjective.

Truth in this.

But up until that point, our position in the table wasn't false. If we hadn't improved (very dramatically) under the next manager, we would have stayed there.

I dont think there is a 'false' position. You are where you deserve to be. You may be under or over achieving, but thats not false.

Chris Wilder has never lost a game which he didn’t deserve to lose. Fact.

Agree with this. The only time I give a small amount of leeway is when you have a team with a massively different goal difference to the surrounding teams in the league; because I understand why someone might use 'false position' in that context. I dont think it is a false position though.

Just to play Devils Advocate… if like Blackpool or similar do well for three or four months in the Prem and find themselves in a Euro spot for a couple of weeks, but they then proceed to get relegated are they or were they in a false position?
