The view from the opposition - Portsmouth

Had to dig about for this, because of their two main forums, neither had a proper match day thread. I learned a new word in the process, apparently someone who bleats is called "squinny" in that part of the country.

Meanwhile, they didn't have that much to say about us as team, with most attention being focused on their team selection:

Right, I ran my trained eye over the Baggies against Boro. They don't look anything special now at all. They were very uncertain in defence, not great in midfield & No cutting edge upfront without Josh Maja probably the best forward in the division out until April. Boro ran them ragged. Tony Mowbray, new experienced manager will try to shore up the defence & get another forward but not many good ones around. I'm looking for a 0-0 but hit them on the break for a 0-1 2nd away win please.

Looks like West Brom aren't happy with their starters.

These goals would have flown in even if we had played the first team.

Jed had to score

I don’t think WBA are any think special. But we just let them walk through. Goalie has had a nightmare.

Until they scored it was an even game, with a full team we could have won this or at least get a draw.

Today is a total embarrassment especially feel for all the supporters who've made the trip.

I noticed before the game that West Brom fans were moaning about the changes Mowbray made to the side. Jed Wallace seems to be much maligned by Baggies fans but he'd have absolutely walked into the team we put out yesterday. Compare that to what we were able to provide.

I don't blame Schmid too much for the second goal. Not only did two right backs get beaten by one winger but the shot flashed past Towler from close range and their lad was alive to the rebound where Towler wasn't. Could have done better but it should also never get to him.

Tony Mowbray must have rubbed his hands together when he saw the team sheet.

Guess that’s what a top 6 side looks like when playing a bottom 6 thin squad, be gutted to have gone

Before their first goal we would punt the ball high into their half without picking out players hoping the ball would fall kindly, West Brom on the other hand would pass the ball to feet.

Yes had we played our best team I think they were there for the taking as you said for 15 minutes we looked better than them
They were a side lacking confidence and we gave it to them on a plate

What's The Hawthorns like? Looks like a decent stadium.
It's looks strange inside they have extended the stand at one end and one side but left they others as is basically like an extended Fratton and North stands
Inside its a decent if a little cramped in the away section in half of one end next to what appeared to be their "noisy" fans with an intermittent drum atmosphere was fairly subdued considering they were hammering us
Well organised if expensive concessions even easy to get served at half time sticky floor reminded me of Joannas
However as it's an older stadium similar in position to Fratton it was a nightmare getting out in the traffic
Far better than those many flat pack out of town sites we have seen elsewhere apart from the score quite a good day outI
Good to see unobtrusive policing and stewards both outside and inside the ground

Agree it has more character than the bowls you see in some places. Looks like a ground that should have a good atmosphere with the stands the way they are. Obviously that's supporter dependent

Quite a few on the train made a point to me that if their ‘first team’ were playing they would have won. When I mentioned the home game and the fact we have put 8 past them it was apparently because the first game was early in the season.

Thought their fans were up there with Boro, Burnley and Plymouth this season at the Hawthorns

Fair comments in the main - I would go as far as saying that Pompey were the better team until we scored. A really basic error by their keeper that handed us the initiative. They collapsed after that point, and it was a case of how many we were going to score.

Ta mush. Pretty fair comments I reckon. A few of them dinny dinlos were getting lairy in the car parks when they couldn’t get out quick enough. Had a word with ol’ matey and he backed off after dropping a dockyard oyster on the ground.

A good - in fact probably my best - mate is a Pompey fan. I was his best man not so long ago, in fact. He grew up there early doors (probably more Gosport, before, but afterwards moving to Reading and then onto a leafy part of Wolves… talk about a tour of growing up in the world’s shittiest towns*) and he wasn’t there yesterday.

But he was one of many fans who put their money down to have it saved from gangsters. Portsmouth FC was literally fucked, once upon a time.

So it’s good to see them back in this division. They so nearly went out of existence - the sheer scale of what they owed to who compared to who etc. would make your eyes water. We didn’t come as close under the previous admin, but we really could have… but their shitstorm was different grade to our own.

Nice to see them back but a three points I’ll gladly have.

He also used to be a regular contributor here in the Pipex/Sid Collins days. Such was a testament to how good this place is.

If we’d have put our best team out we’d have won.

If my mother had bollox then I’d be a very confused little girl. Ta for the 6 points chuck.
