They were our absolute first, and only choice...

......if the others fell through.

Can't remember if it was on here or if I saw it somewhere else but someone made the good point that transfers and deals fall apart and don't happen all the time. Clubs are often forced to look at alternatives to their first choice, that's just the nature of the business.

Most players/managers will have experienced this at some point in their careers so I'm not sure how hung up anyone should get on this.

i don't understand the obsession with being first choice. The only way you can guarantee someone not turning you down is if nobody else wanted them. It would show a complete lack of confidence and or ambition.

It's a bit like walking into a nightclub and starting to chat up the ugliest boy/girl in there and then calling your mate a loser when they get turned down by the best-looking person, but walk home with 'only' the second best-looking in the room.

Equally, maybe someone who has always been first choice for any job they took has to wonder whether they should have shown more ambition and perhaps aimed a little higher.

Yes. It's straightforward enough and all in football are used to it. That is why I haven't got too excited or disappointed by the rumours. I wasn't worried that we have taken 3 weeks either although it would be nice to get a new guy in before the end of the window to do a bit of dealing. Getting the appointment right is all that matters.

It happens in every industry.

How many people here have been in charge of a recruitment process and have offered the job to the candidate you thought was the best fit, only for them to not want the job any more? Surely that's fairly common.

Why is it a surprise it happens in football.

It's actually nothing like that but in my minds eye I am now walking home hand in hand with Tony Mowbray who's decked out in stockings and suspenders while sporting a not very fetching wig while my mate has the second best looking woman in the club on his arm. Thanks for completely fucking my day up and ruining the rest of my life.

Surely Tony would have worn thick tights in the recent cold weather.
