FAO those on a diet, quitting smoking & dry January

Firstly, well done for deciding to take the initiative and do something to lose weight, stop smoking or have a month off alcohol.

It's sad how alcohol is worse than being socially accepted in the UK, it's socially expected.

When I attempted to stop smoking on numerous occasions in the past, fellow smokers would congratulate me for trying and encourage me to keep going. They would also say "I wish I could stop".

Compare and contrast that to stopping drinking. Those who don't partake in dry Jan will often scoff and state "I can't see the point", or "I could stop any time I like".  It's as though they don't want to admit it to themselves, that they can't stop drinking and even more surprisingly, don't want others to stop either.

So keep going lads and turn a deaf ear to those who scoff. Jan will soon pass and you will feel better mentally and physically as a result of stopping smoking , drinking or dieting.

As for the post, meh, I drink because I like it. And from tomorrow it'll be back to being a weekend treat, so preach off.

This has to be the most tone deaf reincarnation I've seen in my short time on here, entirely lacking self awareness and humour. So could be FF or CC tbf...

I’ve given up alcohol for over a month on a couple of occasions and felt no better. Everyone kept telling me I’d lose weight, I’d have more energy, I’d sleep better… I felt absolutely no improvements, and none of my gym metrics showed any improvement over and above when I drank.

I don’t drink huge amounts regularly (any more), but I enjoy the taste, the experience and I stay below the Spanish ministry of health’s advice of under 40mg of alcohol per day.

I have absolutely no issue with people looking to give up, if they feel a benefit from it, great. But in the U.K. we have much bigger issues with the quality of our food. That needs far greater attention than alcohol IMO,

Spot on. 

UPFs and the horrific amount of carbs we consume in this country is the real battle.

I laid off for 13 days once (should have been 2 weeks but England were playing and there was a lot of people I knew out). Didn't feel  the slightest improvement. Obviously no one should binge daily but I am much more disturbed by the amount of junk people eat. We had a meal voucher given us at a well known pub chain. The one salad excepted, every item on the menu involved processed food.  It was truly dreadful yet a glance around the room showed everyone appearing to be ok with it. I can only assume if you grew up with McDs and KFCs, it is almost cordon bleu. I reckon there are huge problems ahead.

Outside of the festive period I really don’t drink enough for dry January to have any effect. Rarely drink during the week and don’t drink every weekend so can easily go 2-3 weeks without having a drink.

Getting back into marathon training from tomorrow so will have a week or two of being healthier just to help get my fitness back.

I gave up for about 6 months a few years back and have never got back to previous levels. It takes me about a fortnight to get through 4 cans these days.
