Every team at this level will have gaps in quality and personnel. A manager has a responsibility to manage those gaps and come up with solutions to negate them. We are stubbornly sticking to the same tactics and formation every week. It’s too easy to play against, and that isn’t hindsight as some did point out how to stop our pressing game when we were riding high and in form a few weeks into the season.
We won’t get better the longer we stay in this division unless Lai changes tactics and the owners decide to spend more than we bring in for a season or two.
This is simply down to results, if we go up he’s done his job, if we don’t he’s failed, the degree to that failure will determine how long his tenure is next season and beyond.
I don’t care about styles of play or some antiquated idea of the ‘Albion’ way. However when I look at the teams around us and above us there is really no excuse not to get promotion this season.
Long term solutions will not be found until we have an owner who doesn’t want to sell the club and wants to invest in its future. Having a manager on a four year contract doesn’t go anyway to addressing this unless results are good. It helps the manager and his pay-off if things go badly but the club doesn’t gain anything unless he’s a success. Personally think 4yrs is far too long a contract, it’s a comfort blanket that means failure to get promotion can be seen as all part of the plan, when it might just mean the start of a long road to worse results and ever weaker squads.
