The biggest mistake IMO is Val’s underestimation of how defensive teams would play against us. It was naivety in the extreme to expect opposition sides to approach a team expected to win most games as they would one which was expected to lose most games. This lack of experience from Val, and those that appointed him resulted in the one dimensional squad additions and glaring weaknesses in our team.
However, we are trying to find a balance, and Val has been flexible in some of his approach whilst not wanting to veer too far from the principles that have brought him success previously. Whilst it’s not pretty, had refs not been inept, had Hugill not been shit and had Robinson been more clinical we would be comfortably in the automatic race.
