I'm sure now that these institutions just do things like this to provoke a reaction.

And yet they spend time and presumably money on the ridiculous list.

However, they have recommended 'given guidance' to suggesting these phrases therefore it is a worthy story that stands upand run by the BBC, not the Daily Mail.

We live in strange and worrying times. Free speech is virtually over due to hypersensitivity.

Hardly denying free speech though, is it?

Some suggestions that have been around and used without a problem eg parent or guardian.

Moreover, whilst the list of suggestions goes beyond what I think is necessary, I think it's quite helpful.  People have got used to saying "their" instead of "his" where the context is plurality but the male form is used initially.  This is little different.

Bit of a non-story really, I would tend to use partner or parent when speaking to someone I am meeting for the 1st time if the conversation strayed that way. I wouldn't want to presume that they had a boyfriend / girlfriend / wife / husband / mom / dad and would tread carefully until I understood where the boundaries were, just because I wouldn't be offended or upset doesn't mean that the person I'm speaking to wouldn't be. They may have lost their Dad and don't want reminding of it directly.

I've been with my partner for over 20 years now and we never got married but I refer to her as my wife for ease, but if someone wants to refer to her as my partner that's also fine - girlfriend seems a bit teenager for us but makes us smile when someone says it. That doesn't mean that someone else wouldn't be upset if we used any of those terms for them.

Will the bible need a rewrite?

Yep - nothing to see here, beyond the usual snow-flakery from the "Anti-woke" brigade.

It's been rewritten literally thousands of times over the last 2,000 years.
