I reckon it must have been about 25 years ago!
Used to get my info from that, boing match reports, 'grorty dick', 'last exit to rolfe street' and a sports argus subscription that used to arrive two weeks after the match!
I hosted the email server courtesy of my company at the time. The service was run by someone else though.
It was boing@pact.ac.uk for a time.
We are talking proper 1996/97 for that.
Re GD - Gladys! She seemed to divide opinion...
That was an absolute lifeline at the time. It was really important to me. It gave me a link to home and something familiar. I used to have to beg and plead with hotel lobbies to print out the daily missives from the ONE internet connection in their office. I'm sure they used to read it and try and make sense of the rubbish that spewed forth, because I used to get some very strange looks when they handed it over!
But to me it was the highlight of my day, I used to look forward all day to getting back and going through it.
So a very belated thankyou for that!
Gladys and her blue nose butcher...she had a very 'idiosyncratic' style of prose!
I remember someone on here deriding Glynis as a "university type who abandoned her working class roots and left the West Midlands". As I recall she was a prison officer who transferred from Winson Green down to Bristol! You get nowhere in that game without an Oxbridge First, I've heard. Met her once at Stockport County and walked past Skinner without even recognizing him. Said to my daughter later "Remember that buffoon with the cheesy grin talking to Glynis? Could that have been Frank Skinner?"
