Solanke, Richarlison, Simons, Gray, Romero, Kudus, Porro, Maddison, Johnson all signed for £40m+ in the last few years, and that's before you get to Van Der Ven, Kulusevski, Kolo Muani, Tel, Spence, Bentancur, Bissouma....

That's a lot of money for no return.

The complaint with Spurs was that they were always restricted to buying players not yet good enough for the Champs League clubs... they didn't pay the huge wages the top players commanded, and they were having to shop in the second tier of player targets. Their record in that market has been patchy at best and been getting worse by the window, and the recent managerial roundabout crashing between so many different styles has left them with a real mess.

Spurs transfer activity over the last 10 years is £892m in the red. Arsenal (£1100m), Chelsea (£1044m), Citeh (£1095m) and United (£1345m) are all above that , but regardless that's a huge amount of money.

Palace look to be the next crisis club. I wouldn't touch them.

Feel bad for Palace, whilst teams like Spurs are punished for being shit Palace have been punished for being good.

Decent league position and a Cup win only to be rewarded by being absolutely ransacked by the bigger boys.

Can you imagine any other business operating like that?

Something is rotten inside that club and a new manager is just the latest Elastoplast. In spite of the money spent there should be a capable XI among that bunch somewhere. The question right now is how much they want to play.

It's almost as if footballers are paid too much....

Indeed. And (unlike many) I’ve no problem with that - IF (and only if) they’re worth it. These guys are international megastars now so why shouldn’t they get the bucks someone else would trouser anyway?

But, the bubble has to burst, somehow. I’m not sure wage-capping is the answer. I’m hopeful the IPTV/firestick explosion in popularity is the leveller football has needed for some time. Or the start of performance related pay. Too many of these useless fucks will never have to work again whether they succeed or not, and that can’t be easy to manage.

Quite. I imagine these fees are offset by revenue streams only the big clubs can properly rely on, but it is pretty barmy.
