I used to battle all year to get a decent pay rise for all employees and encourage members to vote for it and non members to join so we would have a better bargaining tool. Won some good battles and better pay and conditions.
I don’t remember non members refusing more pay even tho they didn’t lift a finger to help.

I’ve had one experience with unions when a number of us went for advice, which many people including myself would have given for free and we got fug all advice because we weren’t a member. No one wanted them to represent us, they just asked for some basic advice. I could lie and say even though we weren’t members, they still tried to help and encouraged us to consider or find a union that would be able to help but they didn’t.

You were surprised that an organisation that exists for its members, and is funded by those members wasn't particularly interested in helping you?
How odd.

I know it’s completely incomprehensible to someone who only cares about money to contemplate trying to help others with some simple advice that would have taken a few minutes of their time. It may have made those that went for advice to consider becoming a member as well.

The fucking one-eyed irony. Cake and eat it eh? Better to call it failure of statecraft

I quickly learnt after helping a non member who management had singled out that it wasn’t in anyone’s interest to assist her.

I think I’m glad I’m not part of a union given the attitude of… we wont give you a few minutes of our time unless you’re a member, and when i say minutes i mean just that, not hours or days. Up the workers… as long as you’ve paid pay your subs.
