This story plus Proths appeal for kids leaving the care system evoked something I experienced through work around 20 years ago, which shaped my view (still embedded today) on why we should never lock up all but the most serious juvenile offenders. I’ll post the long version one day but the short one is that for a period of around 2 years I used to drive a fella who had been in Borstal (still had the tattoos on his knuckles) up and down to Merseyside once a month to see his son (also in youth detention). Gradually getting to know him over a shared love of horse racing he did eventually tell me about some of his experiences there, the lifelong damage evident without having to ask.

The intergenerational trauma relayed in the link posted by BJ was still playing out then and still plays out today.

They do indeed choose their career paths and they are incredibly clever at concealing what they are. They are also incurable. Chemical castration.
