It's often thought that medieval castles have spiral staircases as a defence mechanism. That's a myth. You often hear this nonsense on guided tours of castles.

The myth goes that staircases spiral clockwise as it benefits right handed swordsman defending, and attackers would have to use their left hand to wield a sword and attack.

There's absolutely no evidence to support this, and the myth doesn't take into account that if a castle has been breached so attackers are climbing the stairs within the castle the fight has already been won, so it's kind of a moot point.
