Well yes, quite. But the government didn't quite build it up that way did they?

I care more about the policy than the marketing. Much as an unfortunately significant proportion of the electorate demands you cannot fix this overnight.
My criticism is that we're trying to do this piecemeal with individual deals with France and Germany instead of just saying we'll rejoin the Dublin Convention but no doubt Reformers would whinge about ECJ jurisdiction over returns despite the steaming shit that is our current situation being free of the ECJ.

Turns out the delay wasn't down to the ECHR after all

Why would we need to get to the tens of thousands?

To stop the boats. That is the point, isnt it?

Would 35,000 be a number you'd be happy with?

Just to put a few numbers into the debate as the figures are difficult to make sense of due to reporting.
Gov.uk says there are 111k asylum seekers in the UK. 43k Small boat arrivals in year to June 9k enforced returns 27k voluntary returns 21k returned at port Safe and legal routes 33k There are 32k people in hotels (slightly up) Migration Authority say there were 35k asylum seekers deported in the year to March (I can't tie this data in with the HO data) There is a backlog of 71k (relating to 91k people) cases awaiting initial decision (down from 133k in 2023) I'd say in general it is moving in the right direction and Reform realise this which is why 'Stop the Boats' is the slogan rather than 'reduce the backlog and make the decisions quicker' - not as snappy i guess (09-18-2025, 01:03 PM)Jacko Wrote:(09-18-2025, 11:03 AM)baggy1 Wrote: Turns out the delay wasn't down to the ECHR after all Simple case of 'we haven't had enough time to prepare m'lud' and 14 days extension.
