A good start under Mason and there’s every indication that we could be in the mix come May. It’s so important that we don’t get to carried away when we win and too down when we lose! ATWD

5 game report:
Solid but uninspiring. We need to see more tactical fluidity when chasing games.

Not really. I am 75% happy. Being solid is a really important staring point. But there is a clear pattern, which to me is a concern.

I wanted to wait a day before posting a 5 game report, and think upon reflection our start has been a 6.5/10.
Reason for this being that whilst 10 points is a good return, we have not played a single side I would expect to finish above us yet, and we had 3 very winnable home games in this run. The fact we have only taken 4 points from home games with Blackburn, Portsmouth and Derby is offset by the resilient away wins, but is not good enough for a side with aspirations of a top 6 finish. I appreciate there was a bad refereeíng decision in the Pompey game, and we missed some chances against Derby, but good teams find a way to overcome these issues and win games when they're the better side... We also managed to go out of the cup in the first round in the same circumstances. For too long we've been dropping points at home and coming away saying we were the better side and had we just had a little more luck we'd have won, bad luck doesn't last 3 years, there is a fundamental issue with our squad and creating good quality chances through multiple routes.
Away from home we have definitely improved, and it’s great to see the leadership and organization we now have, but I am trying not to let the fact we were so awful under Mowbray colour what is only really a return to the CC levels of performance. Since Mason has come in, we look like a side that has a plan, and is executing it well, which is the minimum I would expect at this level. What we need to see to really move this up to a 7/8/9+ rating is fluidity in our attack and a sense of confidence we will get a goal. As soon as Derby took the lead yesterday there was not one part of me that thought we would find our way back into the game, let alone find 2 goals.
The summer window has led to some good additions, but I don't think it was a great window overall. Going into the summer we needed 3 things - an energetic, box to box midfielder, some pace out wide, and some leadership at the back - we managed to find 1 of those 3 things. We still look ponderous in attack and our central midfield remains hardworking but predictable and limited going forward, and if anything the sale of Fellows has reduced our already restricted chance creation. As much as I like Heggebo, I can't help but feel the money spent on him may have been better spread across a couple of players.
I'm hoping we can get Bany back soon, that Taylor's arrival may mean we can try Styles in the middle where he's looked exactly the type of player we're lacking there in his games for Hungary and that a fit again Maja and Illing-Junior can add some unpredictability to our attack and get us through to the January window. Our defence will ensure we stay in games this season, but I think we're in for more of the same disappointment at home.

Perfectly put, bud.
Saves me the effort.

A good write up. I don’t think we currently have the creativity in the side to beat very dogged teams who come for a point.
Promisingly we can now win on the road again, and think Heggebo will be more effective away from home taking pressure off the midfield and defence with his hold up play.
Mason needs to get working on the creative side because yesterday we didn’t really craft enough clear chances.
All said and done, although the defence looks solid if we can’t score goals there will be the occasional chance of a lucky goal like Derby got yesterday.
A resilient defence is a great foundation but simply at the minute we look top 10 and that’s it.
