Reserve games at the Hawthorns
#1
Seeing photos of the Woodman corner scoreboard reminds me that I used to go to Reserve games on Saturday afternoons in the 1960s.
Travelling in the train from Blackheath, we would walk from Rolfe Street as the Halt was not open except on match days.
The scoreboard would display the first team score and update it every 10 or 15 minutes. This was a big deal in the days before instant news. You had to wait for the teleprinter on TV at 4.45.
We usedto have a good laugh at these games and either chatted with or tried to wind up the away keeper, if he wouldn't communicate.

Remember this well ,my Dad used to take me up and you used to focus more on the scoreboard to see how the 1st team were getting on .Also Remember sitting on the benches in the Halfords .

Went up late 70s for reserve games.

Saw the likes of Luigi Macari playing for Man U reserves.

Feels a long time ago. All 4 stands since replaced but the ground has somehow kept a certain character.

I went occasionally to Central League games, watched some good football.

Favourite moments was watching Cyrille score on his reserves debut.

The other was watching us win the Central League title, can't remember exactly when but it would have been in the 80s..Garry Childs, Nicky Cross were in the team.

My first trip to the Hawthorns was in 78, reserve game at home to Man City that finished 0-0. I was 5 at the time so have no idea who played. I think back then the reserve fixture was the reverse of the 1st team so we would have played them away in the league on the same day.

Remember me old man saying one of the reserve games in 68 was giving out Fa Cup coupons so he took the afternoon off school and went up and went to the game and got one
