They give what they see. Players and managers are far more full of shit than refs. By a mile.

They’re not paid to get decisions right but they’re not paid to cheat, swear at officials etc. either. And if that’s part of the game, then accept refs get things wrong sometimes too.

Players also get passes and shots and tackles wrong too. Shall we have them explaining how? It’s all utterly pointless. Just accept things are sometimes wrong and get on with it.

Should we also get players and managers to explain why they constantly cheat, try to gain an advantage, bollock the ref even when he is right and they’re wrong etc etc? 

I really don’t know what difference anyone thinks this’ll make. The refs get shit wrong. If they explain why they did/didn’t give a penalty, pundits will sit there with 45 different replays saying his explanation doesn’t match what we’re looking at….. in slo mo, from a ton of angles. And the answer will always be, literally always, the ref saw it once and gave what he thought he saw at high speed from one angle. Literally every single time.

Beyond pointless IMO.

I’ve seen a lot of decisions down the years where I’m sure a ref rejecting what is so obvious that 5000 people have just pointed it out in unison that the immediate response of the little power driven hitler in black just can’t help but respond by being oppositional. Even ironing that out would be a start

The one incidence I could see this working is when you have one particular ref - to hide his identity I'll simply refer to him as 'Twatkinson', who constantly gives iffy decisions against one team in particular - we'll call them 'Sjoke'. 

It'd start to look bleedin' obvious that he was beyond biased if everytime Twatkinson reffed a Sjoke game, he was being asked to explain yet another inexplicable match-defining decision he'd given against them. 

I'm sure every team has that one ref.

No. Not in the slightest. My point is interviewing refs won’t do anything other than get a standard answer that they saw it once and gave what they saw. Every single week. Literally.

It will do nothing. Unless you really want to hear a ref saying exactly the same thing every week. Fair enough if you do, but I think most would be bored of it very quickly.

I remember the ref at the 93 PO final (Roger Milford?) being interviewed after the game and was asked why he sent off Peter Swan. He explained it very well, and no one could have any complaints. 

Refs knowing that they have to explain big decisions in front of an audience may stop them copping out of making them because its 'early' or because its the easy thing to do. 

It may also explain to us why certain things are given, or not, as lets face it, most players/managers/fans/pundits don't know the laws or latest guidance any more than a recent arrival from the planet Zog.
