Women's WC - the keepers
#1
I've caught a fair few games so far. It's been fairly good and competitive , generally.

The one thing I've noted is the quality of the Goalkeeping which has improved. However, the main thing I have noticed, having seen it disappear from the Men's Game, are drop kicks from the goalie's hands. I've seen a fair few 'keepers doing it. I wonder if this will make a comeback, as almost every goal kick from a 'keeper's catch, was a drop kick back in the day.

Is there any reason? Have I missed something?

I think its probably easier to generate more power from a drop kick than a kick from the floor, and in general the female keepers won't have the same strength in their legs as the male keepers.

I haven't seen any of WC so far so this is just guesswork but are they maybe less obsessed with trying to play a Pep-style tippy-tappy out from the back game and realise that getting some distance on kicks is a far more defensively sound idea?

On the subject of keepers, I watched Betis v Burnley earlier and Betis scored from a quick free - kick in their own half!

If you get a chance to watch it please do... Betis get a free kick just in their own half and the defender sees Trafford off his line so goes for the lob.. The ball hits the bar and comes back onto the back peddling Traffords head and in.... Comedy greatness right there.  Big Grin

TBH I suspected this, but a lot of the keepers are still getting distance with ground kicks, when needed. I wondered if its a changing trend to a slightly more direct style , where you play your football in the opponent's half.
