My cousin rang me late last night, given the hour, the caller and our age, I guessed it wouldn't be good news. I don't live around where I grew up and whenever I do visit I rarely see any of my old crowd. Most have died, many have moved away, most of our old pubs have been pulled down. It turns out one of our old crowd had died suddenly, aged 64. I'd not seen him for many years and had long, long, lost touch. He was one of our crowd from when we were first old enough to go to games on our own. 74 bus and a few pence was all it took, we always bunked under the turnstiles. Last I heard about him he had a season ticket and his son was a very promising boxer-although a street attack put paid to that. So I raised a glass to an old pal. He was one of us on the minibus to Oldham 76. He was also one of us at the next game, Leeds away, Aug76. No one there will forget that day. We were attacked from the moment we stepped off the train "Got the time, mate"? Attacked again in the pub pre game. 20 minutes from the end of the game, wave after wave of Leeds fans burst through into the away end attacking all and sundry. Out of our 8 together from the Wrenna pub, some got dragged onto the Sealandair buses by Albion fans helping out, the rest of us got different trains having split up in the carnage. Me and my mate tried to join the main body of fans walking to the station but were the wrong side of the road we fought through gardens, streets, and the station itself. I've never punched and been punched so many times in the whole of the rest of my life put together. Yet we were lucky! We loffed we yeds off!
