He literally didn't have to field? External injury (ie caused by the floor/ball) meant he could not field, but still bat at 3. Internal injury (eg muscle strain) means the time he spends off the field, he can't bat for.

Pope was told by the umpires if you do not field you cannot bat at 3, it caused a rumpus but he had to field or forfeit his right to bat at 3. It was the umpires who called it.
England are "a bit bewildered" at the situation that led to batter Ollie Pope aggravating his shoulder injury during the second Ashes Test, says spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel.

Pope was injured in the field in the first innings and was hurt again after diving in the second innings.

It is believed match officials incorrectly told England Pope had to field, or they head out with 10 men.

"We are a bit bewildered by it all," Patel said.

Surely all those pundits calling for changes in the bowling attack must have realised the risk they were running? Baz'n'Ben will probably do the opposite of what the pundits say.

Fact is, this Pope injury doesn't change the Bairstow/Foakes situation. There's a spare batter in the squad, so in he comes. The fact that he's useless is a disgrace, I agree.

I think there's a grey area here. It was an impact injury, but it exacerbated a known long term shoulder problem. After he scored 42 runs in the first innings, it was probably reasonable to suggest that he was recovered to some extent and should therefore field if he wanted to bat up the order.

The umpires had a poor match. Half the referrals seemed to result in changing the on-field decision. The two catching incidents showed inconsistency. They could have been more strident over the stumping and put Cummins under pressure. I also think they let a lot of head-high deliveries from England go without calling them as bouncers. Maybe they just weren't impressed by the pace (or lack of) in most cases. Umpires have had a good game when we aren't talking about them afterwards.

It really does feel like England aren't giving themselves the best chance of winning. They've got the selection wrong and have thrown away strong positions on the field in both the opening Tests. We really are defeating ourselves and gifting the Aussies the Ashes.

When Australia have hammered us down under they've been by far the best side and deservedly won the Urn. Whilst I don't argue that they're the stronger set of players it doesn't feel like they've been the better side performance wise. They've only had to be average to get a 2-0 lead. It really is frustrating.
