I'm not concerned about our pace attack in the medium to long term. Our spin options worry me. It's a sad indictment of the state of our spin bowling that we're relaying on a retired and (let's be honest) out of form batsman who can bowl some spin (OK, he's more than a part timer, but he's certainly no a front line spinner).
Massive fan of Ali, but there's something about his late call up that should set alarm bells ringing in the ECB about what it says about our long term spin bowling selection.

Moeen not been the same since he returned to the Villa Bears.

He’s our 3rd highest wicket taking spinner of all time
Being brutally honest

As a Worcester fan, as long as England win , I would happily see Woakes have figures of 10 overs , no maidens , none for 600. Villa supporter. But, regarding spin, my lad played junior cricket , and wanted to try bowling spinners. The `Coach`( I use the term loosely ), basically said, `no, you`re too young, bowl medium pace ` etc. He ended playing wicket keeper.

He's good, don't get me wrong, but not being a front line spinner is his own admission.

The right call, one I called for as soon as Leach was ruled out, he really is the next best bet, decent with the bat too

If we're calling up past-it cricketers who haven't played red ball be cricket in ages based on past reputations then might as well call up Graeme Swann.
Hope I'll eat those words but the likes of Travis Head will be licking their lips up against Moeen I imagine. |
